I'm sure it will have a fraction of the volume of postings. What's the best song, ever? To count: - it has to be a complete single song with probably a maximum length of 7 or so minutes, like "American Pie" or "Bohemian Rhapsody". - It can't be a long composite/suite song piece like "Supper's Ready" by Genesis (but short composite/suites like "Uncle Albert and Admiral Halsey" are eligible), and you opera fans can't include an entire opera. - The song has to be a lyrical song, with a typical amount of lyrics and verses. If it just has a few words here and there (like "Nightshade" and "Crystal Clear" by Mike Oldfield, or "Tequila"), it does not count as a "song" for this. - Songs filled with non-lyrical singing, such as "The Great Gig in the Sky" or Mike Oldfield's "Red Dawn" do not count. - For the purposes of this discussion item, rap tracks DO count. - The entry you type for discussion has to be your favorite song, not a long list (but entering two or three might be OK) - It doesn't have to be by Mike Oldfield. -------------- "In the land of the Dacotahs, Where the Falls of Minnehaha Flash and gleam among the oak-trees, Laugh and leap into the valley." - Song of Hiawatha Back to top

There were many songs that struck me right in my heart from the first time I've heard them, this includes such obvious choices as "moonlight shadow", "stairway to heaven", "the riddle", and others. If we're talking about a specific officially released recording, then my vote goes to Alanis Morissette 'That I would be good' because it gets to the root of the basic human need for unconditional love. If we're talking about the best song ever, without considering any one particular performance of it, then my vote would be for Bob Dylan's 'It's all over now, baby blue' because it gets to the root of the basic human need to cope with change, and the leaving of things behind when their time has passed. And if we're talking about the best ever performance of that best ever song, then my vote would be for Bob Dylan at Brixton Academy London, 31st March 1995 because it's a performance that seems to define what singing is really about. It's not great lyrics, melody is catchy enough but not earth shattering.
