Ok lets see if this works...

We pick One of Mikes songs each week , YOU MUST listen to the track before posting .

This is different from the Album section because it relates to how you felt about the song in the moment, not from years of repetition, neglect or disinterest :D

And it's about the song not the video.

The first member to post each week gets to pick next weeks track....Don't reveal your choice until next week.

This weeks track Discovery

From Simons Thunderbucket snare pop right through to his tasty outro fill this song moves.

A revelation about a song about revelation, driving bass and a kick ass solo.

A fiery song perfect for the drive home from work today.

Barry at his best and has dated nicely methinks.....

Did I mention the solo....

So in short, In the car coming home it made the traffic quite bearable.

It will be interesting to see what each individual thinks about each track depending on their day.

Have a listen and post...

I certainly see the song differently now from when I first listened to it, Milamber... But yes, it's fiery. Mike certainly asks some fairly "heavy" questions, talking about which might make the forum heavy too.... But maybe he answers them himself in another song. I already know what song I'll post (as I seem to have beaten everyone to it) - just let me know when you want me to do so.

I like this idea for a thread!  Nice idea...it will be fresh and interesting (much needed!!;)

Discovery

I'm listening at home in the morning whilst doing some work for uni so it's a bit of a diversion!  It is just gorgeous outside, like a summer's day.

This song has never been one of my favourite tracks I must admit..:/ ...it sort of lumbers along...I think it's the vocals more than anything else that I don't quite connect with...

however I actually do like the bass guitar and the drums

It was good to have a 'reason' to listen to it specifically and in isolation, but I'm still feeling the same about it ...I much prefer the next song 'Talk about your life'

 :)

Well you beat Ugo in replying, so were safe from Amarok for a week at least

I picked Discovery because that's what I was listening to today.

It has no bearing on other threads here.

So how did you feel about it after a listen???

Post your song this time next week.

Fun idea Milamber!

OK, just listened to it, though I've been replaying it in my head since first reading this topic earlier.

Not my fave from the album but I've always loved the guitar solo, one of Mikes best IMHO.

Bee's comment about "it just sort of lumbers along" I agree with generally, it isn't a track that grabs my attention particularly (with the exception of that guitar solo! ). Don't like the vocals very much - just me I guess - wonder if I'd have preferred it with another singer? I've never really listened to the lyrics in any deep sort of way, they always seemed a bit like Mike just using his rhyming dictionary to me a bit, though that might be very unfair of me as I have read before comments on what they might be about (RB for instance).

Like the way the main guitar theme links this to Talk about your life. Interesting thing to do on an album.

Yes, listened to it all - but have already classed it as a mediocre pop song. But in the moment I find I am taking particular note of the lyrics and thinking they are very apt regarding recent forum unrest. That 8Os Oldfield guitar impacts in that familiar - home - walking into the kitchen kind of way.

Yes, the two songs do seem to relate.

I've had writers' block for a long time but if I ever do another book it will present its protagonist in the best possible light.

I might as well put my choice now: "Runaway Son". Events may take their course, but that message of salvation is so positive, I think.

Wiga....I just love this phrase...it is perfect...so very true...and so universally understandable...and it is exactly this quality of his work that makes me come back to him again and again and again    :)  :)  :)

( I wouldn't mind finding him playing his guitar in my kitchen actually, either ;)  )

Just a thought, hadn't we better set a date for the new song...I can see nightspore has posted his choice, which is fair enough, but others may have views they would like to share on Discovery? Unless we are clear the thread will descend into a giant muddle...and we don't want that !! do we?   :O !!!!

I don't want to be too rigid and naturally points will get 're-visited' I'm sure, but maybe there needs to be a more definite frame?

I don’t like mike his popy songs very mush, but I have played him for now but the only thing I hear is the instrumental parts of it. The short numbers and the vocal words are not my things. The only thing I wanted to say that it is so unfortunately Mike hangs his red Gibson on the wall. With that guitar he played really in his element, it was his sound that game out of it, what nobody else did. The rawness and the beautiful sound of it makes me still trilling. The best part off the album discovery is of course The Lake.

Well said Mart, I love the Cherry Red Gibson sound as well.

The guitar he used at Knebworth sounded way too thin.

OK so lets make it every Thursday we start a new track.

Due to time differences maybe a rethink on who gets to pick may be in order....

Maybe Matt would be interested in deciding who picks the next track based on post content or such.

If everyone's in agreement ...You pick the next track Bee after
The Runaway Sons

Remember It's one track a week, to give everyone a chance to join in.

If people want One track a day call Fanny ...

:) Yes that would be very nice. Come in throw your car keys down -
"Hi Mike - had a bad day, will you play that solo part in Discovery."
"certainly."<plays it>
"thanks, feel better for that." <puts kettle on>
