What do you think? Will those niggling little melodies now leave him alone, or will he be forced to commit one or two to "tape"?

My heart says he will compose and record, but my head says he will compose only, however, I think he will record the music he composes but just not be tied to a recording contract, so, he may either release it himself, or it could be released after he dies :/  I just can't believe that someone who has been so consumed by music his whole life like Mike Oldfield can just stop, I know John Lennon "Hung up his guitar for 5 years" but did he really? ;)
The best we can hope for is a continuation of the deluxe edition releases I think.

I have an uncanny feeling that he's just not doing music anymore, and that it's not because he doesn't want to, but that he for some reason is no longer able. He has chose not to comment on the issue, which I think he would if he just didn't feel like it anymore.

This is my fear also. I'm thinking it's a health-related decision.

Same here, alas! I can't imagine music getting out of his head (or body) unless his head (or body) has lost the capacity to host it.

That is a very sad thing to think about. I really hope it's not his health, and it would have to be a pretty bad health issue for him not to record anymore. It's such a shame we can't find out something.

It doesn't have to be that bad. Fatigue or anxiety (just as examples) can render you unable to work. The thing is, people often think that now matter how bad your health is, you can still do arts and music. That is not so, and creating music on a professional level is quite hard work.

I think Sally has been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, and stopped producing music for a long time because of it.

Mental health can also render it hard to work. I know this from personal experience with my writing. I’m not sure if Mike is currently in a relationship - he seems to have been more productive when he was. It’s hugely valuable to have the support and grounding that a partner brings.

If it’s mental, I do hope he comes out of it, for his own health and happiness, irregardless of whether he ever records again.

If it’s physical, god speed those doctors and specialists.

I wonder if another exciting commission, such as a major soundtrack, might spur him on too.

I think he is hospitalized and unable to create anything anymore.

The closest I could choose in your poll was retired (involuntary).

Any new releases are mere repackaging and anniversary releases, things that needed no input from Mike. Web domains have expired, important dates have passed with no new anything, no interviews, not even a photograph in public.

Wishing him and his family the best.

Assuming (and hoping) the suggestions about his health are wrong, and he's simply spent/fed up/ in need of a long break ... then my observation would be just that the one thing above all we know about Mr Mike Oldfield, apart from his obvious talent, is how often he changes his mind.

Creatively restless, but also, constantly in flux with his thoughts. For that reason, health permitting, I feel there's more in him, when his soul demands that he do something. Years from now even. Even one or two minor pieces. Just a sense that he won't go to his final days without more music emerging just because it will be there inside him, talking to him.

I feel he's retired and for whatever reason he has chosen to keep the reason private.
That is his right.
All the best Mike x

Mike was once asked "Will this be your last album?". It might have been referring to Millennium Bell or Tres Lunas. I don't remember, but it was around that time.

He replied something like "Will this be my last cup of coffee?"

Maybe he's not drinking coffee anymore ;)

I always thought people played music in order to relax; I've never heard that producing it is stressful. With regard to Mike's new albums, there's probably a lot in his back catalogue. Perhaps out-takes of that country and music project he was rumoured to be involved with about ten years ago?

If he isn't going to release anymore new music, It would be great to carry on with the deluxe editions.

That's interesting, is that a new Google Earth photo? Mike has always liked to move, he has been in that house for a number of years now, so, I would not be surprised if he has moved.

If music fans are happy to put up with the awful sound at concerts, why bother? It shows no one really cares about quality sound reproduction.

Perhaps he's crusing on his yacht, "The Lady Moura".
