Well, I've just noticed there's no place for Collaborations in the album topics place, so I'll write my topic here.

I heard 'Collaborations' the other day, and although I've always found it the weakest album from Mike, along with 'Heaven's Open' possibly, I really love it. Specially the A side and Argiers. And in anyway I've always felt that in a way it's the same type of album, almost like an aearly version of 'Voyager', mainly because of two basic features: it's full of tradicional music, and there's an uncommon number of musicians that collaborate in the creation. Of course 'Voyager' is a much more dedicated and full of quality work, although 'Collaborations' was exactly into the time I think Mike was into his best fit on the guitar, along with 'Ommadawn' and 'Incantations'. But the major difference between both records lies into their last numbers.

Don't you think so...?  :p

Well, to me, the biggest difference is that "Collaborations" is a compilations of singles, B-sides and excerpts from other albums and other miscellanea, while Voyager is a full-fledged album. But yeah, it gets close to traditional music in the Voyager way, but they're completely different entities with different goals.

In my opinion, anything with "Argiers" in it has a high chance of being better than Voyager. :)

Collaborations doesn't work as an album.  The tracks with David Bedford are so utterly different to the tracks with Leslie Penning as to render the whole thing almost schitzophrenic!

I don't care for David's compositions, and despite Mike's involvement, seldom play these tracks.  However I do love David's contributions to Mike's albums.

I love the tracks with Leslie and play these often.

If Mike had waited until 1977 to release Boxed he could have compiled a neat 'singles' compilation and left the Bedford material for another day.

In Dulci Jubilo/Portsmouth/Argiers/The Path/Vivaldi Concerto In 'C'/Froggy Went A Courtin'
William Tell Overture/First Excursion/Cuckoo Song/Pipe Tune/Wrekorder Wrondo/Don Alfonso

Now that would have been a great 4th album for Boxed!

Totally agreed with that! Such a track listing would be just ideal.

I think we should elect Jules to compile the ultimate Oldfield Singles collection! :D

I have a few free days in September.  I'm just waiting for Mike to give me the nod.

So, are you thinking of the 1977-1985 track listing already? :D

Ah, feck it, I'm up for doing a 4 CD career-spanning Rarities box set.  Now if I can just get Virgin, Warners and Mike around the same table.....

;)
