[Olivier & Korgscrew: if you don't think this topic fits in here, please move it.]

I think that most of you ;) may know that various people recorded "Women of Ireland" after its composer Seán Ó Riada [yes, it's definitely not a traditional tune... :)] originally recorded it in 1964 with his Celtic group Ceoltóirí Cualann... that original version is obviously antecedent to Mike's, and there are other versions coming both before and after his. These are the ones I know, arranged chronologically:

- 1975: The Chieftains (on the soundtrack to "Barry Lyndon")
- 1990: The Christians (as "Words", on their album Colour)
- 1996: Kate Bush (as "Mná na h-Éireann")
- 1996: Mike's version :)
- 1998: Sarah Brightman (as "So many things")

I have all these versions on CD, but as I know there are more versions around, and as I'd like to collect most (if not all) of them, I'd like to know who else did the original tune, or (like the Christians and ms. Brightman) a song based on the tune.
Thank you in advance.

Hello Ugo,

Here you can see that, according to Richard Carter, 'Women Of Ireland" was first featured in 1964 by Ceoltóirí Cualann in 'Ó Riada Sa Gaiety'...
Here is what I do know :
There's a Sinead O'Connor version of Women of Ireland on "Ain’t nuthing but a she thing" in 1995.
I also know that it exists numerous version but under different names. Search For : "Woman Of ireland" or "Mna Na Heireann" and also search for artists like The Coors, Enya or Clannad...

Andy Davis recorded it for his album, 'Clevedon Pier', which I prefer to Mike's album version. But I do like Mike's 'funked-up' remixed single version.
