Not really a problem with the sounds. I'm impressed if you synthesised them yourself
Perhaps the sequencing side of things could be refined to sound more realistic. I think this is the 'NES' sounding quality that Q! is talking about. For example, 2'32" is a good example where there could have been more scope for emulating the guitar faithfully. I'm not sure how you make your covers.
The mixing of levels at 1'14'' sounds OK to me. I regard my aural perception as being quite reasonable. However, seeing as you and Q! noticed an imbalance, it's not a very comforting thought to me - I would, more than anything, like a profession in pro-audio and studio engineering
The 'crying' synth at 1'34" doesn't really sound like crying to me either. (I hope I'm not alone on this perception here, someone back me up!) To me, the synth sounds similar to the old Farsifa Organs that appear in the quiet section of TB (the equivalent TB section to 'Blue Saloon' from TB2) - the high-pitched chords that fade in before the louder double-speed guitar section kicks in. In your cover, the problem is that you set it to play a rather intracate melodic line. Because the attack envelope is set too long, the quaver passages don't have a chance to sound completely. If you want to keep this sound you could perhaps just play the long chords omitting the quavers. What's sounding now is an abrupt stop where there should be harmonies
I agree on 2'21". It's a bit high, perhaps you could find/create a pan-pipe sounding patch and put in the appropriate inflection (down an octave from what's currently there)
Another small point: I noticed the use of delay in some parts. The percussion part in the Balinese choir section (4'45") could have this delay effect set at the semiquaver value of the tempo. This will improve the dry sound
I appreciate all covers posted here, and the people who've gone to the trouble of doing it. Can't be easy. A version of 'The Lake' would sound good with synth sounds. I'd do one if I ever had the time -sigh-
