My Favourite side would be side 2 because for me it has more feel more 'soul' in it.

Side one has a few more standout moments.  My favourite bits of TB occur across so many versions that a minority are in the original and only a couple on the flip-side.

One is the lonliest number that you'll ever do. Two can be as bad as one, it's the lonliest number since the number one.........uhhhh........

I don't really like the entire album. But my preference goes to Side Two because it's less frequently heard than Side One, and because I love the Hornpipe. :D

Side one, for sure. But I always listen to the whole thing.

I'm not really a huge fan of the beginning of TB. I think my favourite moment of TB is really the part after the caveman. I think that's one of Mike's most newage sounding pieces, but as a matter of fact I don't like newage at all.

Side 1 on the original Tubular Bells, but equal on TB 2003.

I prefer TB 2003, except for the John Cleese announcing-of-instruments. I would have preferred Alan R.

I still don't have a copy of TB 2003. I only own the original. Should I buy the ultimate edition? I mean 150 euros is a lot of money, and I'm not sure what to expect from it. If it's just some lame book saying what I already know, then I won't buy it.

I don't remember whether I already stated this elsewhere, but I always had the feeling that the announcements of instruments were supposed to sound funny. John Cleese is funny, to me. :) By comparison, Alan Rickman (who I know as a "serious" actor) is almost too serious.

@ HR lover: the Ultimate Edition is worth something only for the 5.1 mix on the DVD, which isn't available anywhere else. If you aren't bothered by 5.1 mixes but you like Mike's 2009 remix of the piece (because that's what the 2009 re-issue is ultimately about), just get the 2-CD Deluxe Edition. It's really cheap on Amazon. ;)

Tubular Bells 2003 has in my view really improved side 2, you can go back to the original album, and listen to what it was he really wanted to do. But as I have never owned the album on LP I have always considered it as Part 1 and Part 2 of a whole, as opposed to Side 1 and Side 2. And as such, would always listen to the album all the way through.

I'm voting for side 2.

I recently found an old CD portable player in a second-hand shop. You know the type, with anti-shock and a -BBS- switch. Anyway I dusted off Tubular Bells and gave it a spin. It sounded great - almost like hearing it again for the first time.
Almost, but not quite.

Side 2 has me fascinated!
I don't believe the music is solely played by Mike; it sounds too much like a group. With that intonation only gotten from playing with friends, (and family in Mike's case).
In comparison, it's like saying Side 1 is linear and Side 2 is analogue - the differance speaks volumes.

Which now leaves me wondering about the Madman singing half-way through. He doesn't seem to be who I thought he was. Maybe this is why the original refrain was used in the Exorcist movie - the guy is absolutely bonkers ... whoever he might be!

Part 2 !

Once again I like the contrasts ,
sometimes you have very high-pitched tunes , and then deep sounds with good old drums . This part is also full of different instruments , which work well together .

I have listened to tb well over 2000 times, and each time I listen I discover some small piece I had not heard before, this to me is the magic and the intrigue the album has to offer
