This is the first (and I hope not the last so please contribute) Music Showcase. The first Showcase is titled 'Ambience & Bells'. The Ambient genre can span a wide variety of sounds and with Mike Oldfield in mind I was thinking of a 'Songs Of Distant Earth' type of feel.

The way you approach this will be entirley up you to. The word 'Ambient' first really came into being from Brian Eno's album "Ambient 1: Music for Airports" he described the idea as "Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting".

As well as Mike, other artists credited with the evolution of Ambient music are Wendy Carlos, Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk to name but a few.

Oh, and as this is a Mike Oldfield forum the other criteria is to make sure the track contains 'Tubular Bells' or at least a 'bell' or two!

The deadline for entry will be 10pm Saturday 7th January 2012. So about 6 weeks through the festive period to get that track out.

I will collate of the tracks and then publish them (on site to be advised) and then publish the link onto this forum thread.

All the best!!

Not heard of twinkle bells! I would like to request lots of bells and lots of 'Christmas Ambience.'

Looking forward to that,

Thank you.

Good luck - we're counting on you!!   :)

No pressure.  ;)

I've got a track with tubular bells on it - but it sounds like the theme from a horror film.  Is that OK?

The challenge for the showcase is to write a new track, or am I mistaken?

Also, again I'm probably wrong, but the brief is "ambience and bells" which could be any kind of bells, the last few posts have mentioned tubular ones... but I was thinking more about sleigh bells seeing as it's THAT time of year ;-)

Cheers,
Terry.

Hi Simon,

In the spirit of the 'showcase' it would be best to write a new piece of music to test your wrting/production skills. I plan to start tonight on something... where it will take me god only knows!

Hi Terry,

Yes, as I stated in the last thread, the spirit of the challenge is to write a new track from stratch so we are all on a level playing feild... (I suppose I have a slight advantage as I knew the theme! not in a competative way of course!;).

Yup any bells will do but as we are on an MO forum I guess the odd Tubular one wouldn't go amiss! So go for it with all the bells (and whistles)!

....well i think in fact jingle or sleigh or snow bells are the same ...no ?

Just to let you all know I have created a new Soundcloud account called Tubular.Net Showcase.

Tubular.Net Showcase

It looks a bit empty at the moment but hopefully with some new tracks by 7th January we will begin to fill it!

I'm in the middle of recording the new Steamprog album, so I'll have a go at writing a new track after that.  I don't respond well to pressure (anxiety disorder), so I may not make the deadline - sorry in advance, but I'll do my best.

Hi!

Not sure if you wanted them uploaded directly to Soundcloud or not... but I've put mine up there now. I know it's still a while until the deadline but I'm really busy for the next few weeks!

It's not my usual style - and I'm not sure I'd like to buy it myself if I heard it somewhere else!!!! :-O

I decided to push myself beyond the boundaries of the "Ambience & Bells" challenge and also use my 'Voices of Passion' package that goes heavily underused... so there is Ambience, Bells, and Belles ;-)

http://soundcloud.com/purplerhapsody/eurasian-groove

Hope you enjoy it!

The gauntlet has been cast down... who will pick it up? (j/k)  ;-)

Cheers,
Terry.

Ah well, it's not a genre I'm great at - and it's probably why VoP languishes on my hard drive not getting used very much.

This was the 3rd version that I tried but I can't make it a song - I can't sing and I don't have a package in the same vein as Vocaloid so can't get a computer/sample generated voice either.

And honesty is always best!

Thanks Philippe.

Cheers,
Terry.

Here is mine, very spontaneous, did the sound in one minute, played, cut off the first 40 minutes, and posted it on YouTube. (Was not sure we were allowed to post it here before the deadline.)

There are parts I love (from ~5:20) and as a whole I love it too, it's relaxing, a little bit jazzy, a little but hypnotic, you don't want it to end, well I don't want it to end (I have to post something about peaceful vs spooky - is it the same thing? more later) But so many imprecisions, so unprofessional. I think most people don't/won't love it.

I better get my finger out.....

Can you both either allow me to download the mp3's or send then to me direct so that I can upload them onto the soundlcoud site?

Just please let me know what 'you' as the artist needs to be called and what 'tags' you want to be added to the track when I upload it (all helps when people search)...

I'm sure sure at this stage wether I should make it public or release all the tracks on the deadline date..

What do you think guys?
