I completely adore this 2009 Tubular Bells...breathtakingly beautiful it is. There's so much I could, and probably will, say in time, but for now the thing that I just cannot get enough of is Mike Oldfield's Single. I was completely unaware of it's existence so when I heard it for the first time I was captivated..totally.... It is one of the most perfect pieces of music I think I know. That particular theme has always been one of my most favourite from Tubular Bells, so to unexpectedly hear it treated in this way with such tenderness and feeling, brought ( and still brings ) tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat. I stood transfixed when I first heard it  -  unable to move...it transports me somewhere far more beautiful than this world...and to think he was so very young when he wrote it and going through overwhelming,  difficult, confusing times. I use the word beautiful far too often I know, but really I can think of no other that adequately describes it.

So, the whole Ultimate Collection is good, worth having in my opinion, but the part I love the most is those 3 :56 of the Single, maybe the essence of Tubular Bells itself for me and certainly high up there with Ommadawn and Amarok and Tubular Bells itself in my lifetime's love.

I have hopes now of 'themes' from other albums treated in different ways..revealing more and more music and showing us Mike's unique talent for creating and crafting eternal melodies. He really knows how to do this, and do it well....and I think only he can, because only he knows where the music has come from.

Wonderful stuff. Listening now, tears in my eyes...so wearing sunglasses

  ;)

I agree with Bee regarding Mike Oldfield's single. I too was completely unaware of it and as Bee commented, it's been one of my favorite Oldfield themes through the years, and on the single it's treated so reverently, with an emotional facet my words can't possibly describe. I'll get my sunglasses out now too...

I was aware there was a single but hadn't read enough about it to realise what it actually was. I had just naively assumed it was an extract of the "excorcist" bit of TB to commercialise on that. So when I heard it I was literally breathless at times - tingles up the spine for me. That theme *wasn't* one of my favourite bits of part 2 and to hear the same theme reinterpreted in such a beautiful way. Just WOW! Love it  :)

Why did Mike chop a chunk of the hornpipe on the end of side 2 though?

I suspect that's all there is on the tape - I'll bet Phil Newell spliced the Boxed version together from bits of what Mike worked with there and (a copy of) the original tape and those were the only pieces which were kept. That would be why the instruments don't all come in at the same time, it sounds to me more like parts are missing than that they've been staggered deliberately.

Some splicing definitely went on - evidence of that is how it was mentioned that, when they came to make the copy of the master for Mike to use as a template for Tubular Bells 2003, the Sailor's Hornpipe was missing from it. It may never have been kept on the same multitrack; Tubular Bells was, as far as I can make out, mixed in sections and edited together at the stereo mix master stage, so it's possible the Sailor's Hornpipe was mixed down from a different 16 track tape then edited on afterwards (which is backed up by the track sheet for Part Two, which seems to end at 21:37 with organs, bass and electric guitars).

That's my best guess, anyway!

That would make sense.Another wierd bit is the way the acoustic guitar comes in for the coda on side one.I know this is a different take on this bit and not just the same with the reverb softened as the piece is played a lot straighter with less hammer ons and pull offs.I have heard this version somewhere before but cannot place it (lets face it there are so many excerpts dotted about it would be a mammoth task to listen to them all).Any ideas?

Can someone with a DVD-Audio player confirm that the 5.1 mix on the deluxe edition (2009) is a DVD-Audio 24/96 5.1 track and NOT a lossy Dolby or dts mix?

Thank you!

There is no lossless mix on the DVD. There's a 5.1 DTS mix and a Dolby Digital stereo one.

That is pretty sad, thanks for the info Ugo.
Looks like I'll stick with the Quad SACD and the 2003 DVD-A for now. I'll be looking for an original Virgin pressing of TB on vinyl as well on Discogs...the ones I have of HR and Incantations (both Virgin UK pressings) are very nice on the ears.

Sad that this Ultimate TB edition doesn't have a Blu-ray with a 5.1 24/192 PCM mix.

My veiw for what its worth as Ive read all your long lists of pros and cons is,

We all loved the 73 TB and then we all felt a bit hard done by when Boxed came out but we loved Vivs bit.
We all loved the live Exposed version the found the Airbourne mix and liked that to.
We didnt like the Elements mix but liked the 25th mix.
We liked the 2003 TB but new it was computer led.
We liked the 2003 DVDA
We liked the SACD 5.1 although a bit weak.

Now we have the ultimate mix ?
I dont think so.
Digitaly mixed ,TB will never sound right again because like HR this is the only mix that will ever be sold.

And I think hes ruined  The Mike Oldfield Single for ever !

Just out of curiosity what is it you find weak about the Quad SACD mix? Have you listened to it through four full range speakers? I thought it sounded exceptional.

I don't think there's anything wrong with digital, but it's got to be kept in high rez mixed at 24/192 or even DXD straight from the analog tapes. The 2003 mix shows how full it can sound, but unfortunately it was like someone's first foray into surround. Had Alan Parsons or Elliot Schriner had their hand in it I think the 2003 mix would have been a lot more palatable for 5.1

Woah, hang on! This is the only version of the Mike Oldfield single I have heard yet and I love it. Are you telling me the original version is even better?

Yeah, you shouldn't have too much trouble. I remember when I first saw it about 17 years ago. It was a 7" picture sleeve and it was £14, a bit too much for me with my parer round! You can pick up the single on ebay now for a just a few quid or about a £1 if you're lucky. Infact I sold one of my copies recently and it took quite a few attempts to sell it, it seems not many people knew what it was until this recent reissue.

Well I think MOS original is better because, it has Balls.
The large guitar sound has been completly wiped out.

Most people like originals because they remember where they were when they bought it and the memories it brings back.

But Oldfield, like at lot of artist just cant leave things alone and think a little tinker here and there can help. Which is fine but dont disreguard the original ,and at least include it to show a comparison. Ta

ps, Im on GMT time and thats why I only respond the next day.

No sweat.I sent my tuppence worth this morning. You raise an interesting point.I bought my copy in 2000 after placing an ad in Mojo magazine.I was expecting it to be a simple extract from TB so was surprised and i have to say delighted when it arrived and i listened to it.So when it was announced it would finally be availalbe officialy on CD i had to have it.The new version is ok but i really wanted to hear the dense guitars of the original in a less crackly setting.Mike does have a habit of (for want of a better word)dicking around with TB and releted stuff to an almost obsessional degree. While we always buy it it would have been nice to have had the original there as well or,for what it's worth in the case of the single, leaving the bloody thing alone and just presented a good CD edition instead of his 'revamped' version.OK he likes it now but why not leave it alone as we all like the original.

@ bee: if you wish to hear a de-crackled [original] version of MO's Single, just PM me. :)

@ Caveman: judging from what I can gather from the book, Mike O. doesn't have fond memories of recording the Single, and it can also safely be assumed that he doesn't like it at all: by remixing it he found a way for himself to like it. I've said a thousand times here in this board, and I repeat, that IMHO Mike does everything he does - the way he does what he does - for himself. Not for us. That's why he did TB 2003. That's why he did Amarok. :) I know it's perfectly logical that we, as fans, expect our favourite musician to release something which appeals to us. But Mike seems to me to be the kind of guy who makes music that appeals to himself first of all. Then, if we like it, that's good. If we don't, that's good all the same.
