...Througham Slad! Had a chance to "pass by" so, 40 or so years after I first developed a (not so...) minor obsession with it (from the pictures in the "Boxed" set) I finally made my pilgrimage.

Would post some pictures if I could figure out how?

I was quite obsessed with those pictures too. I wanted my house to look like that. :)

If you can put your pictures online somewhere it's pretty easy to embed them in your post. I uploaded this to tinypic.com and once it's finished uploading you see the "IMG Code for Forums and Message Boards" which you can copy and paste into here.

Alternatively the Image button in the post editor puts the tags around any url for you if you want to host the pictures yourself somewhere.

Hi First Excursion...I am beginning to suspect we are twins separated at birth!

I've tried uploading the images to tinypic, but it's rubbish, most of them come up with "this image has been moved or deleted" (which appears to be a common problem from a quick search). I'll try to find another image hosting service (does it work from Flickr for example)

One that did work on tinypic here hopefully...

Hmm, that didn't work, so I've uploaded the pictures to Flickr here:

Enjoy!

Hello Priabonia,

it seems a lot like it.

That's great to see these, thanks, I'm glad you figured out a reliable way to share them. Looks like you had nice weather for it too. Must have been fantastic to be there.

That round window from the other side! I see someone has been sitting around with a few Heinekins there in that nice weather. That would be nice.

What a place to record some music.

Nice! Any tips for me as I'm thinking of visiting the area. I see you got quite close. There is a public footpath to follow right?

Amazing pictures! I too was obsessed with those pics in the Boxed booklet. Still want to live in a place like that.

For years I assumed the photos were his house at Hergest Ridge! It was only in recent years with the booklets in the remixed CDs that I realised it was a different place. The way the Boxed booklet is worded it makes it sound as if the photos are of the place Ommadawn was recorded. A bit misleading!

To those of you wishing to repeat the experience, it's all clear here:

http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf....ids.srf

Minimise it one click, then if it comes out how I am looking at it, then the arrow will be pointing directly at Througham Slad Manor. As you can see, there is a public road (yellow) leading to it from Bisley, though I would strongly advise avoiding the black arrowed route through Calfway Farm which is very steep and also narrow (a stone wall had half fallen when I was there and I only just got my largeish SUV through)...

...Anyway, if you take a car, you can park at the bend in the road just after where the (red dots) footpath crosses - this is where the "Private" sign is in my Flickr collection, the road widens here). From this point it is a short walk down to the house, all on public roads or paths.

Any more questions, just let me know!

Thanks for that. Do you mean park in the bend where it says 'mound'? Also is the private sign for real or is it actually public access? I actually have visited before but went down Hayhedge Lane and could only see it from a distance. I couldn't figure out how to get close.

No. a bit further along from the "mound"

You can actually "drive" the route in google maps streetview

https://www.google.co.uk/maps....;8i6656

just "drive" forward from there and you'll see the parking and the "private" sign. This is not valid, as the Ordnance Survey map clearly shows the track from there onwards as a "other route with public access"...that's what the green dots mean.

Speaking of actual places in Mike's universe, I'm pretty sure this is his house on Paradise Island. I "accidentally" parked in its carpark last year. It's officially a club, but he's not going to advertize his presence, is he? Anyway the Sherlocks among you will recognize the shape as the same as the pattern of girly dancers in the video for "Portsmouth" - the St Brigid's Cross. This from Wikipedia:

"The Goddess Brigid was one of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Her feast day was the feast of Imbolc, and the cross made of rushes today is very likely the descendant of a pagan symbol whose original meaning may have been locally understood even into the early 20th century in rural Ireland. One remnant of that tradition in the meaning of the Brigid's Cross today is that it is said to protect a house from fire."

Mike does not live on Paradise Island but on Eastern Road in Nassau, Bahamas:

I think this is probably a ploy to throw people off the scent, ensuring Mike's privacy. Anyone who has been to Nassau knows that, apart from the tourist strip, it is mostly a slum, grading at best to lower middle income. Paradise Island is the elite suburb, accessible by toll bridge (albeit operated by friendly and "chillin'" people).

By the way, when I visited the Bahamas I asked quite a few people if they had heard of Mike Oldfield, and if they knew he lived locally. All except one person had and did, but no one had seen him or knew his whereabouts. (No, I wasn't stalking Mike!   )

Sorry to correct you once again. The house is called Villa Las Brisas. He bought this 1950s house in 2009 and on Google Maps you can see his studio next to the pool as well as his 17 ft boat at the pier. His former wife Fanny lives just around the corner. He does see his two youngest boys very frequently and cares very much about them.

Even after the divorce, Fanny still live that close to Mike? I didn't realise that, must be good for him though, to have his children still close.

If I were Mike and wanted privacy, I'd buy lots of houses and publicize only one with a slight connection to me. But it's nice to have actually received replies to a thread that I started. Most of the time it's like shouting into a void around here. Oh for the days of Ugo and Milamber and Cavalier (Lost Version)...
