If I were Mike and wanted privacy, I'd buy lots of houses and publicize only one with a slight connection to me. But it's nice to have actually received replies to a thread that I started. Most of the time it's like shouting into a void around here. Oh for the days of Ugo and Milamber and Cavalier (Lost Version)...

I know what you mean, this forum used to be so alive, but it has been dormant for a long time now. Come on Mike, give us some info about TB4

I think the TB series has run its course. I'm hoping for "Return to Hergest Ridge" (!;) but that ain't gonna happen....

(In an attempt to return this thread to Througham Slad)my vote is for "Return to Incantations", but given that David Bedford is no longer with us, that *definitely* isn't going to happen

It's where Mike used to live in the 1970s.

He lived there from the fall of 1975 to the summer of 1979 and recorded Incantations there.

Successfully brought right back on topic there manintherain. I'm told in no uncertain terms it was a very long time between albums there. Must have been a great place to sit and enjoy perfecting the music.

I always wondered about that. Oldfield was there for four years and (on the evidence of the photos and footage available) he had a wonderful studio and recording space. So it's surprising he recorded so little. He did Incantations, and a few bits and pieces.... and that's about it. Did he hit a creative wall now he had everything he wanted and nothing to prove?

Just like to say I made it to Througham Slad thanks to the help of the original poster's advice. Bit daunting to see the private sign but strolled down anyway. Not a soul about but outside was a skip full of rubbish, so something must be going on!
Do we have a list of everything recorded there in that brief 4 years?

Thanks for that list, manintherain.

As far as I know, he was already doing musical doodles that would eventually become Incantations as early as '76 thought, wasn't he? That documentary film Reflection came out in '76, didn't it? That had early Incantations tunes and a complete stand alone song, The Path.

Yes, there's lots of good stuff there. At the risk of sounding argumentative, however, I'd stand by my comment. It's not a huge amount of work for four years, particularly coming off the back of such well developed and refined works like those first three albums. And particularly as it's a home studio we are talking about. He just had to roll out of bed and head right on into that big barn (after a few trampoline jumps, naturally)!

I suspect that in addition to the well publicised personal issues he was going through, he also had a bit of a creative block over this period. (Interesting however that an Oldfield creative block involves an output ten times more prolific and interesting than your average musician!;)

Do we know what parts of Platinum were recorded? Can we add Wreckorder Wrondo, Pipe Tune and Cuckoo Song to the list?

Pipe Tune is so Incantations and Woodhenge just sounds like it came out of Througham Slad, very different to the rest of Platinum. Almost like a bridge back to that youthful decade.

Incantations itself is substantial. I'm not really surprised it took so long to develope. Mike exploring new ground throughout but it always sounds like it's going somewhere. It's beautifully thought out.

Then conceptualising that ambitious tour, arranging the music for it, recording the gigs, tidying some of that up for the Exposed release, another of the best albums of all time.

Two excellent double albums, all those collaborations and singles, some of Mike's greatest work in all.  :)
