I have recently obtained the original 1979 testpressing of The Space Movie which in the end was never released.
Tracklist:
The Orchestral Hergest Ridge Parts One and Two
Ommadawn Part One and Two-remixed versions
The Orchestral Tubular Bells
Incantations Part One to Four Remix Versions.

Can anyone tell me if the Ommadawn version is in fact the Quad version or a diff one all together and when was Incantations ever remixed or is this an early demo.
Its an interesting version and would love to know the story behind it.
Cheers

Some scans would be more than welcome.

How about digitalizing this amazing piece of Oldfield history?

Do you have some more informations about wherefrom the test pressing has surfaced (is Phil Newell in desperate need of money?)?

;)

So far no answers to your question, just a bunch of very jaleous people  ;)

Hmm... maybe the other rarities collector from Spain knows more about this, on the argiers.com (I think) page.  :)

According to Philip Newell the Space Movie double LP did not reach the test pressing stage.  The only known copy is a metal acetate with sides 1, 3 and 4.  There is no known copy of side 2, other than a tape copy if I recall correctly.

I cannot remember the exact details but one of the acetates is 1 sided, the other is 2 sided with an odd pairing, something like side 1 backed with side 3 with a 1 sided part 4 IIRC. I did not get to hear music so I cannot comment on the content.  I have seen a CD copy on ebay, but I don't know if this is from the acetate or the soundtrack to the video. Maybe these are one and the same?  Anyone know?

I've located some pictures from a few years ago and have sent these to the webmaster of this site to upload.

Can we have those in very high resolution? Somewhere there is a program that can translate scans of record albums into digital music files.

Ha ha - very funny Hiawatha!

The fact that a copy has supposedly turned up is significant news.  Even more interesting is that it is mentioned as a test pressing.  Philip Newell believes that the LP never made it to test pressing stage, it only ever made it to acetate.

The scans I sent to this site are judging by the label acetates, not test pressings.

Like most people on this forum I would really like to hear this LP, and a conversion to digital format would be marvelous.

Has anyone been in contact with Zinc to find out if this would be a possibility?

Also I saw a CD on ebay a few years ago which was supposedly a digital copy - the user was something like atmospheric, does anyone on this forum have a copy of that recording and can they let us know what it contains and if it differs from the video soundtrack.

Ommadawn Part One and Two-remixed versions
The Orchestral Tubular Bells
Incantations Part One to Four Remix Versions.

Just looking at this again - the plot thickens. A double album would be not be capable of holding all this music.  The above track list represents 5 albums worth of music - or over 200 minutes of music in their complete form.  These must be edits or extracts - the full albums cannot be included on a double album.  Does anyone know a more detailed track list...

Zinc - are you reading this?  Can you comment?

Hello!
Thanks for uploading the pictures! It was nice to see them. That record is almost like the holy grail for Oldfield fans...

OK, the reason it was called a test pressing is my fault.
Many years ago I met up with Philip Newell after buying some Oldfield memorabilia from his son. Philip produced the Space Movie discs when I mentioned Orchestral Hergest Ridge and I assumed they were test pressings. Only when Paul Harris got to do a proper interview with Philip did the truth emerge - they are acetates.

Here is a breakdown of the music therein:

SIDE 1 (19:08)
The Orchestral Hergest Ridge Pt 1 from beg. mixed with
J.F. Kennedy speech then rocket explosion R/T 2:51, then
The Orchestral Hergest Ridge Pt 2 complete but with Martian
Song taken from original LP R/T 16:17

SIDE 2 (28:03)
Rocket lift-off (3-2-1 Countdown) mixed with speech about
the Russians reaching the Moon (von Braun?) R/T 1:05
Ommadawn Pt 2 without Paddy Moloney's sequence or
On Horseback but it does includes a repeated 19" section
R/T 8:02 then NASA speech R/T 0:14
Ommadawn Pt 1 more or less complete but slightly shorter
R/T 18:42 contains an inbuilt 9" pause for more NASA speech
and the drum run-out is mixed with Ed Bishop talking about the
Saturn V rocket
(This side is missing from the acetates)

SIDE 3 (26:46)
Eerie wind intro to The Orchestral Tubular Bells Pt 1
countdown during final instrument intros - lift off then
voices in Space R/T 21:40
Final part of Tubular Bells Pt 2 (without the Sailors
Hornpipe) R/T 5:06

SIDE 4 (27:05)
Incantations Pt 1 edit R/T 7:37
[Beginning to about 5:13 then edit to Lucina singing bit]
Incantations Pt 2 edit R/T 7:19
[With voices in Space and landing on Moon from 6:49]
Incantations Pt 3 from beginning R/T 6:12
Incantations Pt 4 edit R/T 5:57
[Beginning to 1:44 then edit to Finale mixed with evocative
speech about Earth and Space]

Total R/T 101:02

There are no remixes, only edits and voiceovers.
The entire thing would have to be on a 2 CD set unless it was compressed. The proposed Side 2 never made it to the acetates. Philip kindly let me have cassette copies of his discs (and tape of Side 2) so I do have the full set. The breakdown of the music is all I am willing to provide as, from bitter experience, anything else will be abused.

However what Zinc has described is very close to the above and we need to know more about it.
