As part of the 40th anniversary of Virgin Records, Richard Branson has posted a scan of the original Tubular Bells order from September 20th 1972 on his blog.

I though Mike said he just saw the Tubular Bells being taken out of the studio after John Cale used them and asked if he could use them? So, does that mean Virgin had to re-hire them?

It's probably like the little microphones they use in musicals - they break so often that you just assume when you hire them out that the same brand of microphones will come back, even if it's not the same actual microphone.

The strings were probably invoiced independently of the guitar in case musicians had their own preferred strings.

Yes, I thought the same. That the bells were an afterthought of some other session when they were about to be packed off and sent back.
