I've nearly finished getting the archive file of it and have been previewing some of the clips

Does anyone know the background behind this? Why did they choose to film it? It isn't so much a making of TB2 as Mike trying to record early tracks with a camera crew getting in the way!

I think he probably recorded them specially for the video. The question of why still remains, though. I can only assume that somebody had a documentary in mind. Something makes me think that Tom Newman might have had something to do with it, but that's not much more than a suspicion.

Many bands are exploring this while recording an album, and I've seen those clips from the making of from TB2 and Mike seemed to enjoy the whole thing(and was very funny in some moments too).

I'd love to see something similar for the brand new album Mike is currently working on.

Yeah I agree with you there :D

The close-ups of Mike's playing are interesting, a bit like the commentary in the Knebworth concert video. I don't think Mike is recording the parts, just having a go at playing them for the camera - otherwise the glock would be miked up

Are there any other early versions of TB2 that I can find on the web? I've got the common B-side Sentinel Early Stages track, but I've also heard of a 'pre-Trevor Horn' mix of some of TB2 that appears on a bootleg. Haven't had any luck finding it on eMule, so I'd be grateful if anyone could help me out :)

That's a different side of Mike that I like it a lot.

lol

the odd thing is that it doesn't sound that much like Mike's voice! More of a strong Essex accent compared to how it is now. I also wonder how the distortion from the amp got on to his recorded voice

BTW - Thanks Holger for the link. (http://www.iespana.es/Geltrular/English/fotos.htm) Am I right in thinking that the Early Stages demos of other parts of TB2 are very similar to the originals, just that for example Weightless doesn't have any percussion? Not having the best of luck downloading anything off the site due to their server :/

Are there any other early versions of TB2 that I can find on the web? I've got the common B-side Sentinel Early Stages track, but I've also heard of a 'pre-Trevor Horn' mix of some of TB2 that appears on a bootleg.

Apart from the videos there are 2 audio bootlegs about that record. The first is simply more or less the same extracts from those videos and it's called The Making Of TB2. The tracks are:
01.- Glockenspiel
02.- First Electric Guitar (1)
03.- First Electric Guitar (2)
04.- First Electric Guitar (3)
05.- Bass (1)
06.- Bass (2)
07.- Bass (3)
08.- Acoustic Guitar
09.- Second Electric Guitar
10.- Keyboard

The other boot is The Early Stages of Tubular Bells II (aka untrevored mixes because they are demos recorded before Trevorn Horn was involved in the project). The tracks included are:
01.- Sentinel (Early Stages) - the same track included on the B-side of the Sentinel single.
02.- Clear Light
03.- Blue Saloon
04.- Sunjammer
05.- Red Dawn
06.- Weightless

Let me say that the videos can be downloaded from eMule, the e-link is as follow:
ed2k://|file|Mike.Oldfield.-.The.Making.Of.Tubular.Bells.2.-.Ultra.Rare.Video.rar|145979637|BD4B03B06B2C19B625A9B10EA4B05ED8|/
And this archieve includes:
01.- Bass (1)
02.- Bass (2)
03.- Bass (3)
04.- Glockenspiel (1)
05.- Glockenspiel (2)
06.- Guitar (1)
07.- Guitar (2)
08.- Guitar (3)
09.- Guitar (4)
10.- Guitar (5)
11.- Keyboard

The names are slightly different from the ones on the audio tracks but the order is more or less the same so it's easy to match each guitar track with the related video. Also the glockenspiel track is divided in 2 videos ;)

I just recently found these clips on google and have to say that the acoustic guitar clip is great.  Just Mike sitting with his Guitar playing a variation of the signature theme.  I also notice that the percussion bit is based on the early stages mix of Sentinel.  Pure Genius!
