The Blue Moth Awakes

To say that the moth had always been here would be misleading, for there was no sense of time for him; he could recall no beginning, and no past. There was just an awareness of existence, here on the rim of this canyon beyond the edge of the world: it was a solitary vigil, accompanied by a faint sound of distant drumming that never ended. Below, a thin line of smoke forever rose from flames that were never extinguished, from a fire that had never been kindled.

He knew nothing at first of the three presences that entered the canyon. One was a dazzling creature of flame, flashing gold and red in a continual shifting of patterns along its wings as it gracefully glided through the air. Another was a yellow butterfly, light and delicate, flying the length of the canyon by the side of the fire-being. The third was invisible, speeding with his companions high above the river until they reached the moth.

Only a touch was needed to give purpose to the rippling of the blue moth’s wings. He soared out over the great canyon, far above the smoking fire, across the winding blue river. On either side of him the butterfly and fire-being moved with ease and natural grace. The drumming grew louder at first, then receded, as the group of three flew high and long to the other side of the canyon. Their goal was a portal, geometrically shaped, enclosing a transparent window whose faint colours hinted at some mystery that lay beyond. Without hesitation, the fire-being entered, and vanished; then the butterfly. Finally, the moth.

Through the portal, everything was different. Everything was strange.
A voice softly said, ‘Welcome’.
The blue moth glided down to the cactus below him; touched it.
‘The Origin,’ breathed the voice.
And so the adventures began.
