Let´s see... Although for me Tubular Bells was the biggest masterpiece in instrumental music, when I heard Tubular Bells II I felt it got to overcame the first part... a way of analising the comparated values of them two is to compare them track by track, and here´s my opinion:

better in:

Sentinel II
Dark Star I
Clear Light II
Blue Saloon II
Sunjammer II
Red Dawn I
The Bell I

Weightless II
The Great Plain II
Sunset Door I
Tattoo I
Altered State II
Maya Gold II
Moonshine I

My conclusion is that TB I has the best track only in the case of the weakest tracks from both records. It´s a little bit difficult to choose in some casesm, but I think this is quite my own opinion.

More opinions welcome.

See you friends.

Sentinel ||
Dark Star |
Clear Light |
Blue Saloon ||
Sunjammer l|l (sorry, I love "outcast")
Red Dawn ||
The Bell ||

Weightless ||
The Great Plain |
Sunset Door |
Tattoo ||
Altered State ||
Maya Gold | (is my favourite section of all Tubular Bells!)
Moonshine |

But, in the unity, I prefer the Tubular Bells || album, it sounds more clear to me, more elegant.

I find these assessments and comparisons fascinating. I also bow down to your superior decision making...I just can't split the two I'm afraid.

They sound so different to me in terms of production, perhaps it is unfair to compare...who knows!

At the end of the day, there would be no TB2 without TBs, so TB (the original) wins by a nose!

Just listened to TB II again. Changed my mind. Maya Gold is better than the Ambient Guitars section from '73.

OK, the topic is old, but I think by now the more interesting comparison would be TBII vs TB2003.

Okey! This is my list!

Sentinel I|I soUrce of secrets ( a techno sentinel)
Dark star I
Clear light I
Blue saloon I
Sunjammer I|I Outcast forever
Red dawn II
The bell (both)

Weightless I
The great plain II
Sunset door II
Tattoo I
Altered state II
Maya gold I
Moonshine I

I will say that Tubular bells II is best because it have the perfect complex songs ever! The bell is both. On tub I ; I like the start. The bass is still going on to the grand piano!
                                                            On tub II; The bell is more happy and the voice is better! Both of them have perfect bells. 2 become tubular BELLS
But on my list there is more Tub I .....
 :/
Maybe maybe. But some of the songs in Tub II stands stronger!

WHAT ABOUT TUBULAR BELLS |II| Mike??? he he
My wish would be that anyway!
A fresh new Tubular bells 4 in 2005 he he

I recall seeing a rundown of the corresponding tracks from TB (or was it TB2003?) and TBII somewhere. For example, "Introduction" = "Sentinel". Does anyone know where I can find it?

Anyhoo... I think TBII is absolutely glorious. I do tend to skip "Moonshine", though, as I like Hillbilly music even less than I like Blues music.

Sentinel I
Dark Star I
Clear Light I
Blue Saloon I
Sunjammer II
Red Dawn II
The Bell (both)

Weightless II
The Great Plain I
Sunset Door I
Tattoo II (I really love this track - always reminds me of Scotland)
Altered State I (I'm not sure why, I really hate the Piltdown in this)
Maya Gold II
Moonshine I (A fine stand-alone track, but it just doesn't fit in with the rest of the Album)

Having said all this, Outcast, Top of the Morning and Far Above The Clouds are three of my favourite TB tracks ever, but because the structure of TBIII is different to TB and TBII, I wasn't sure where to compare them. They have a stand-alone quality which I really love.

I've always thought that TBII is a more perfect version of TB, regarding the 'quality' of their melodies and arrangement. I've always seen it like a beautifully composed, coherent symphony, while TB is more accidental and raw. Besides, the light atmosphere of TBII makes it way more closer to my personality. For these reasons I like all the tracks from TBII better than their correspondent ones on TB. However, Ambient Guitars is almost as good as Maya Gold, that could be a draw maybe. :)

In my eyes, TBII is a far more idealistic version of TB. I think TB has an industralised, grim, chaotic feeling to it, particularly in the finalé of Part One. However, in TBII, it feels a lot more uplifting, calming and light-hearted, and the heavy guitars are always accompanied by a soothing rhythm.
