I personally think that the new formats are in for something of a struggle.

I know a lot of people who own stereo systems of various descriptions - just about everyone in the western world does. The vast majority of those people don't have their loudspeakers arranged to form the 'stereo triangle' needed for proper stereo imaging. These are people who don't really care about what direction the music comes from (as is evidenced by the way they simply sit their speakers wherever convenient - one on the floor, one on top of a cupboard, and so on), and I think they represent the 'average' music listeners, for the simple fact that there seem to be a lot like them. I'm not convinced that these people feel they need multichannel audio, or indeed high resolution audio, and so I suspect that high resolution multichannel formats may remain a specialist thing for a good while.

There's then the question of how many want to pay extra to have six speakers when two will do the job for them...it depends on how it's all marketed to them, I suppose, but I suspect that there is some resistance in that area.

The 5.1 mix of Ommadawn could be a potentially interesting development, but it does all depend on how it's handled and of course, mixing the album with a modern digital mixing desk, digital reverb and so on is going to lend it a different sound, which listeners may see as an improvement or as a degradation...

I think fans' concerns over instruments whizzing around are quite well grounded - Mike has expressed a liking for that happening, after all, and from what I remember, the 5.1 mix of Introduction had far more motion in it than the stereo one. It can work, and it can also sound gimmicky, just as heavy panning in stereo can.

Considering that 7.1 systems are already upon us, I don't think that question where things go next are irrelevant at all. We do have to question where it stops being a genuinely welcome improvement to the listening experience and where it becomes a chance to sell us more hifi equipment and remixes of all the albums in our record collections. We maybe shouldn't forget that the owners of several of the major record labels (Sony, Matsushita and Philips - the latter two own MCA and Polygram respectively) also have interests in the consumer electronics industries...

Mike seems genuinely impressed with the 5.1 thing Id imagine he has heard his fair share of gimmicky fx and standards that come and go in the music world I think he has wanted this presentation of his work since the quad box mixes wich if Im correct failed to impress him.I like Toby have yet to really hear 5.1 except the very rare occasions I visit the cinema Lord of the rings time again soon LOL.Ive always thought great music dose not need this surround thing but then again It is rather tempting to imagine what Ommadawn may sound like in this new standard.

I would  like Ommadawn  if possible to come from an appropriare 24 track analog reel to reel and then introduced to the digital world and 5.1.As its predominantly an acoustic work there may be enough natural ambience for the ommision of over the top digi reverbs etc therefore preserving the original atmosphere with the bonus of hearing it in  5.1.

music still sounds the best in stereo

I cannot be more agree with that. Good music dont need Especial EFX to be better. Specially if it wasnt conceived that way.

And Ducan....
I have a 5.1 System, ok?
In fact I have two of them, to be exact.
Now...keep guessing.

Regards.

well I have three - not that I'm counting!

As for 7.1 - show me the format?  I know that some amps have additional amplification channels but this seems to be to enable you to have 2 pairs of surrounds.

My amp supports 6.1 dts-es but ultimately the carriers are fixed now with the SACD and DVDA being 5.1 - and they are going to be the only formats to carry hi res audio.  I severely doubt any of the blue laser formats will go for anything more.

Yes - there is no 7.1 format, it's just something invented by hifi manufacturers (at the moment), working off existing signals from a 5(or 6).1 channel feed. Of course some people may yet try to matrix two signals into each of the surround channels, which could actually work reasonably well for more ambient sounds, but of course anything involving matrixing isn't too hot if the material really calls for discrete channels (something which may well have been part of the downfall of formats like SQ, though that faired much better when re-jigged by Dolby to form Dolby Surround). Certainly more channels are in some people's minds, though how much is just a result of doing things just to give products an edge (albeit an edge which nobody needs...but if you want 7.1 surround mixing facilities, you can have them) is perhaps open to debate.

As for the points made about music sounding better in stereo, I have to say I disagree. I think that really, it depends on the material.
Some things sound most appropriate being basically mono, just with a little stereo ambience. I don't think the additional channels of ambience would be detrimental really, if producing the same music in 5.1...but there would be a question of whether 5.1 is really necessary if everything apart from the reverb is going to be panned front centre (that question may disappear later, should 5.1 become the norm rather than the exception).
I really think that the most exciting thing is when the music is actually produced with surround in mind...there are a lot of possibilities...

When I talked before in this topic about a possible QE 2 7.1 Mix, it was meant as a joke. I didn't even know that the 7.1 existed.
As Korgscrew says, it's not a format (yet), but a well-known hardware trademark has developed a 7.1 PC sound card and it's selling it today. And, of course, you'll have to buy the 7.1 speker set...I think 7.1 is coming close...
Maybe I should change my (joke) question and ask:
Will your sound system be able to play the next DVD-AXJ Five Miles Out 12.4 Mix? Maybe It's coming soon! :D

What is not fair, IMHO, is those of you who say that all of us who think that a 5.1 mixes of the old material arent going to add anything interesting to that albums, is just because "we dont have  a DVD-A System to listen to it". Our crystal gazing is not working properly, ok?

Thats not truth, for example, for me. I´ve got those players, and even If I hadnt, thats my point of view, and from some others, and must be respected, or might be.

5.1 mixes COULD  good for some certain kind of music, but obviously not for all kinds. I even I´d add again that for music which wasnt intended to sound like that , yes, it can be good, but will not add anything new and in some cases can destroy the atmosphere of the original, or the balance.

This is one argument of the many that can be found about this.

A new mix of Ommadawn! Hooray!
And after that, a new mix of Hergest Ridge, a new mix of Incantations, five new mixes of Tubular Bells, and maybe a new mix of Platinum! I can't wait!    :/
