Why is this such a controversy in MO fans group?
"speak..." is a charming little song, not something that could have beed expected from Mike and David, and i really like listening it...at least it is so much better than many of his later eighties pop tunes!

Speak is an ok tune.  It has kind of an English music hall feel to it. Definitely recorded for fun, don't take the song seriously.

It's basically bad 30's music hall  ;)

As I note in another post, I think it would come off better if they were badly drunk while singing it.

Though it has a crazy kind of charm.

I think they were in fact badly drunk while singing it.Mike did spend a lot of of time drunk at that time.It certainly sounds like they were nissed as pewts. At the start i hear a tamboirine being dropped and then when the singing starts someone bursts out laughing.

To the haters: It was just a B-side, for crying out loud-and you all know that.  The lads were having some fun... no hidden intentions or concealed significance.  Considering how reclusive MO was/is, it's lucky we have it at all.  If it HAD gone unreleased, all of you detractors would be screaming bloody murder for it being such a rarity.

It's a great little tune.  The fact that neither MO or Bedford were trained singers makes it all the more poignant and funny!

See?  I'm laughing right now!

Speak - the only track ever written that I could possibly be persuaded to perform at a Karaoke evening, on the basis that I could probably equal the original performance standard.

Well maybe.

Funny song :D - reminds me of something The Goons might sing, I wouldn't be surprised if Mike was influenced by them. In The Ying Tong Song the running feet at the end remind me of Maggie's dance in Amarok.

Wot? You don't like Mike's version of "I Got Rhythm"? It's the only version I do like! And even if you don't like the song, you have to admit it's stood the test of time.

I do like it it's just not one of my faves and yes it still stands the test of time probably much better than some 80's stuff of his but i love that stuff too
It was just the first song that came to mind
Might take Platinum for a spin now actually
cheers

I would vote for Shine, and every track from Heavens Open close behind it, except for "Gimme Back" which almost cracks a smile.  :/
