@Jules - Haven't heard it for a long time, but I remember that 'Eye of the Tiger' intro as being pretty powerful, myself. What the problem with it, Jules?

Uh....you mean apart from it being one of the most laughably empty-headed and trite rock anthems of all time?

;)

No, no - forget the song. Just the intro (as Harmono says).

I can't even remember how that one goes, people at school like it because they know it from 'Rocky'

I've only got one thing to say about all that - Sweet Home Alabama
Lynard Skynard's excellent intro and altogether great track. This topic's a really interesting one, hope to see more contributions as there are so many more fab song intros out there. :) Should have mentioned this before,IMO Jules has made really good choices for his examples apart from CCR - Up Around The Bend(as can't remember this ).

Try it in the Weird Al "Rye or the Kaiser" version. At least you will get a laugh along the way.

A couplo of good ones...

Dire Straits - Walk of Life -> That rock organ just rocks
DakotaMoon - Another Day Goes By -> Nice blues style intro
U2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For -> For God's shake, that intro  was even used in spanish TV as generic music...
OBK - La Princesa de mis sueños -> It's a spanish band. A gentle piano mood for a beautiful ballad.
Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry, Be Happy -> Doo doom do doeeoop, dooby ooby doobee doo...  Don't worry :p Anthologic!
Jerry Lee Lewis - Great Balls of Fire! -> Yeah!!!!

Well, there are loads of good intros, that's only a small showcase :P

OK, so, in that case.....

The Beatles - I Feel Fine
The Stones - Honky Tonk Women
The Who - Substitute
The Kinks - You Really Got Me
The Beach Boys - California Girls
The Monkees - Pleasant Valley Sunday
Pink Floyd - Money
Creedence - Up Around The Bend

That's the trick for a good single - hit 'em right in the solar plexus from the git-go!

Jules

Great choices Jules   :) , but I'm not familiar with Pleasent Valley Sunday or Up Around The Bends.

OK here are some of mine

Queen - I Want To Break Free  (45 rpm intro is better than that on The Works LP) , Bohemian Rhapsody
Rolling Stones -  Jumping Jack Flash,  Satisfaction.
The Beatles - Day Tripper
Sky - Toccata
Pink Floyd -Money
Metallica - Enter Sandman
Edgar Broughton Band - Out Demons Out
Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love,
don't know if this one's allowed, as it was withdrawn from sale before many copies were sold.  Peter Grant didn't want Zeppelin to become a singles band.
Tubular Bells, or Mike Oldfield's Single.
:) .

Hope something on this list grabs ya.  :)

Others worthy of mention are:

The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again
Pink Floyd - Sheep
Genesis - Watcher of the Skies*
Yes - Going for the One
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Deep Purple - Highway Star
Led Zeppelin  - Immigrant Song

Singles... mmmmmm ... Zep's "Stairway" doesn't count, does it? :)

The one that pops in my mind right now is The Who's "Who are you" - I'm a big fan of CSI. :D But there are many others. The Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever", for example.

Great choices Jules   :) , but I'm not familiar with Pleasent Valley Sunday or Up Around The Bends.

Pleasant Valley Sunday was a huge hit for The Monkees - you must have heard it some time....

Oh and it's just the one 'bend' for Creedence Clearwater Revival.  Pick up a best of CCR album sometime - can't go wrong with that band!

Hi Jules

I'm sure I haven't heard Pleasant Valley High.

I'll have to check out some more CCR, I'm only familiar with "Bad Moon Rising"

Alan is this restricted to 45rpm singles, as I've noticed a few album tracks sneaking in too ;) .

Within two seconds of listening to Up Around The Bend after downloading, realised of course I knew this.Quite often I remember only music and not track title, and this CCR one's well worthy of being on a great intro list. Also, curious about Metallica's Enter Sandman & was blown away by it's intro and rest of the track. There are quite a few already mentioned that would have gone on my list including Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath that's an intro & a half.

The following may not be the most fabulous intros but,I've always liked them:
All The Young Dudes - Mott The Hoople
You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet - Bachman Turner Overdrive
She's Not There - Santana
Fanfare For The Common Man - ELO
All Right Now - Free

Fanfare For The Common Man - ELO

Black Sabbath - Wow really atmospheric intro.
Fanfare For The Common Man- ELP ( not ELO typo error).  Fantastic track :) ,

Since LP tracks have been creeping in, here's my favourites

Sympathy For The Devil, Street Fighting Man- The Rolling Stones
The Prophets Song, Somebody To Love (also a 45rpm), Stone Cold Crazy, White Queen - Queen
Since I've Been Loving You, Stairway To Heaven. When The Levee Breaks, Immigrant Song- Led Zeppelin.
Comfortably Numb, Interstellar Overdrive, Time, Fat Old Sun, Atom Heart Mother- Pink Floyd.
Tomorrow Never Knows - The Beatles
The -Who Won't Get Fooled Again
Edgar Broughton Band - Evening Over Rooftops
Nothing Else Matters - Metallica
The Clansman, The Angel and The Gambler (also a 45)- Irom Maiden
Highway Star, Lazy- Deep Purple
Parts 1 of Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge,Ommadawn, Far Above The Clouds.

Sorry if this reads as a long list, but so many, difficult to narrow down, all great intros leading into great songs/instrumentals.
:)
