I'm sure I haven't heard Pleasant Valley High.

Me either, but I have heard Pleasant Valley Sunday!

Genesis - Turn it on Again
Porcupine Tree - Blackest Eyes

And for an entire album of flawless, fabulous intros? Look no further than HERE!.

I'd forgotten all about this classic album - Muse - 'Origin of Symmetry' - until I dug it out today as a result of this thread. Pure magic!  :D

Probably "Another Pleasant Valley High" was found buried in the soundtrack to "Saved by the Bell: The Burger-Flipper Years".

i quite like Guns and Roses - Sweet Child of Mine

Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out)

Queen - Bijou, although its not really a lyric based song, but the whole thing is amazing, so the intro is good too! lol

:D

My faves all need to be played loud ;)

Blondie - 11:59
Toyah - I want to be free
Mike Oldfield - Heaven's Open
ACT - Snobbery and Decay (I prefer album mix of intro)
ELO - Tightrope
Seal - Future Love Paradise (video is live, intro to the single better but I can't find a clip)

Honourable mentions must also go to:
Marillion - La gazza Ladra / Sláinthe Mhath from the Thieving Magpie live album. The way they link (2:00 in the video) from the classical Rossini to starting playing I've always loved
Band of Horses - The Funeral, used to fantastic effect in that astonishing Inspired Bicycles youtube clip
Blues Brothers - Shake your Tailfeather

My God what an old thread.Nice one too!
Ok perfect singles.....

1)Waterloo Sunset-The Kinks.A perfect single IMHO and full of typical Ray Davies imagery and so English.
2)Itchycoo Park-The Small Faces.Again damn near perfect.
3)Paperback Writer/Rain-The Beatles.Brilliant riff on the first one and although i always preferred Lennon's stuff this one is brilliant. And then on t'other side a Lennon song.Perfect!
4)Layla-Derek And The Dominoes.Been mentioned already but such an iconic riff.Died a death along with the album when it was first released in 1970 but did much better when rereleased in 72.
5)Lay Lady Lay-Dylan.Can't really say much. One of the best 70's Dylan singles.Don't know that much about his 70's output aside from Blood On The Tracks but this is great.
6)The Smurfing Song-Father Abraham and The Smurfs."Where are you all coming from"So profound. Were are any of us coming from? Those little blue guys had it all so sussed.
7)We All Stand Together-Ruoert and the Frog Chorus/Paul McCartney......i may be taking the piss here.Or i may not.

@Matt - years ago I sold hi-fi and all sorts of stuff in a Tandy/Radio Shack shop and always used Heavens Open intro to demo speakers. Usually with the amp turned up to 11  :D

Clarity of the piano, then the guitar and "Boom"!

ELO Tightrope, great intro to a dodgy track for my ears.

@ Matt: I don't think "Heaven's Open" really works as an introduction to Mike Oldfield. People who don't know him and hear only that song may think that he's just a rock/metal singer with an ugly voice, which of course he's not. :D Many Italians who only know "Moonlight Shadow" still think that Mike Oldfield is a woman.

Perfect singles? There are many. Here are some:

[Layla - agree 100%]
The Beatles - Hey Jude/Revolution
Deep Purple - Black Night
Queen ... no, not Bo Rhap - too common. :) Let's say "Killer Queen".
The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black
Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder - Ebony and Ivory
The Alan Parsons Project - Time, and obviously Eye in the Sky

More to come... :)

Of course it is, that's classic Yes. But that's also a 22-minute, side-long piece. Weren't we talking about singles? :D

This thread has been revived too often recently - now pay the price! :)

Seriously, this is a cracking intro.  The use/sample of the snares is inspired.  Unfortunately, their inspiration doesn't sustain the track as a whole.  Hearing it in full for the first time in a while, I didn't find the rest of it as disappointing as I remember but once the modern percussion kicks in and the "doops" are there it's just not the same.  The alternate version, as this is one of those songs that no one ever really seemed to work out was the true version, where it breaks down into a charleston is no better or worse.  Check out the Top of the Pops clip as an example of that .  And double check out the Rammstein one.  That is truly inspired

@ Cavalier: the version you posted above is the original Doop - one of the two pieces on the A-side of the original Doop 12''. It's called "Sidney Berlin Ragtime". The other piece on the same A-side is an even better (IMHO) version, called "Jean Lejeux et son Orchestre". Both were considered at the time as "the original version". :D
