I'm curious what the general opinion here about my favourite Oldfield-song, Shine is.

I don't really like the way Jon Anderson sings it. Plus, I really hate the video, and of course this doesn't contribute to my liking of the song. :)

Not my favourite either. I really like Jon Anderson as a singer, but not this particular song unfortunately. The guitar solo is pretty good but again there are others I prefer.

I'm afraid I avoid it whenever possible.

I really have not made up my mind about these songs. The rest of the Discovery-era songs I listened to with Discovery when it first came out: I know those well and love them.

I never heard "Shine" or "Pictures in the Dark" until I discovered in the mid-1990s a VH1 videotape that I had been sitting on unviewed for many years. I've still not listened to them that much to really make an opinion, except that I don't like the discordant singing on the verses of "Pictures in the Dark".

I've also never been a big fan of Jon Anderson's voice.

i love it too  :)
I personally like jon anderson very well. I have all the albums to jon and vangelis. His voice is very special so then when i first heard shine i must confess that the song find its place in my ear at once..
First song with jon and mike was high places, and that one i like very well too..

But shine is better. It makes me glad and happy and the way jon sings is very good i think. He have the "something" in his voice.

Yikes, that song is horribly grating - not even because of Jon, but because of the melody itself and the cheesy arrangements and synth sounds recycled from some very old Moog (that's what they sound like, at least).

I far prefer In High Places, as far as Jon Anderson is concerned.

Ha Ha Ha a classic there Jules!!

Its not a Mike track i play very often. I like Jon Anderson as the Yes frontman, sounds like Mike and Jon got together at the local but had one too many!! This was the hangover.

I dislike it so much that I don't play it and I skip the video on the DVD too. Jon Anderson is worthy of far better material to sing and Mike is far better than this too.

I have always found it hard to understand how 2 great musicians (and 2 of my favourite artists) could produce something so cringeworthy. Jon has done some great work with Vangelis - perhaps he understands Jon's voice, its strength and limitations, far better than Mike.  :/

Definitely helium!!!  I'm not a Yes fan, the only Yes tracks I know are "Owner Of A Lonley Heart :( awful IMHO , and "Wonderous Stories" :), I quite like this one. My husband has a Yes album from the 80's, I dislike this.  I dislike "Shine" apart from the guitar solo.

really funny jules ha ha ha

you know... the first, first time i heard his voice i hated it.. It was after hear him with vangelis. Gosh i love vangelis and before this jon voice i had voices, 1492, and oceanic vangelis albums. So then i bought jon and vangelis... and i must confess that the suprise gave me a shock. Jon and vangelis was really something far from vangelis albums i had ha ha...
But after a time i heard more on jon and vangelis... and before i could think more i came to the point and like jon's voice... ;)

Uh-oh, I counted on a slightly more positive feedback. Shine is almost always the first song I listen to when I'm after a succeeded exam. It's so happy and has lovely melodies and rhythm. :)

BTW, I do like Jon's voice in general, Jon & Vangelis' Page of Life is one of my most favourite albums.

I like SHINE very much, too! It just puts me in a happy mood...
But I'm a fan of Mike's pop songs in general - an opinion that isn't shared by a lot of fans. I would give a lot to get SHINE on CD but it's already good to have the video on the ELEMENTS-DVD!
:)

'I Hear You Now' is still the definitive Jon and Vangelis track for me. They have made some beautiful music together, but this stands head and shoulders above the rest in my opinion.  ;)

I enjoy the 12" version, but not so much the single version included on the Elements DVD....so, if we're talking about the extended cut, I voted 'I like it'.

How does that compare to "The Friends of Mr Cairo"? That is the only one I've heard before.
