I have a lot of both vangelis and jon anderson in my collection, but Shine still sucks.

It tastes of commercialism to me..what will sell. Mike thinking he worked to get vangelis in the charts, maybe it will work for me. And Jon will sing anywhere for anyone who fits his musical tastes. In high places is another duff track - the only mediocre one on Crises. Actually, in high places was better when the fairlight was to the front on the Five Miles Out tour.

When Jon sings his own lyrics he can make me shiver (close to the edge, wonderous stories, friends of mr cairo), but when he's on commercial mode that voice just grates like a nail on a chalkboard...or my cat fighting the new cat in  the street.

What's wrong with everyone, is there a competition going on around here to see who can be the most negative about Mike Oldfield!!!!.

I love Shine, it is a colaboration that works really well for Mike, Jon sings it very well, and Mike plays one of his greatest solo's, plus in the video they both look like they had a great time doing it.

No, it's just people giving their honest opinion, just as you are giving yours. Personally, I'm kind of indifferent about Shine. I neither like it nor dislike it.

I LOVE IT!  :D

It has everything I normally hate, cheesy lyrics, well, let's just say that I would normally only like the guitar solo, BUT

Just as with 'Flying start' (so sh** it's great) I ENJOY IT! So much so, for me, these are Mike's best pop songs, I know they aren't really, anywhere near, but for me they are!!  :)

Flying start, it seems Mike and Kevin Ayers? were drunk throughout the production, FAB

Shine, the singing is great IMHO, and plus it makes me think of the girl I really fancy, so always happy  :)

Thanks for these, the DVD made me like them

[EDIT] This is definitely not the normal me, I've heard it, 20 + times today, still love it just as much, although, before I got the DVD, I thought it was awful! I guess my mindset has changed ;)

Yes I am a fan of Shine too. Its just very positive, happy and tuneful - it reminds me of the mood he creates on Innocent, another track that divides opinion! The words fit the music. But I didn't like Shine very much at first possibly because its a bit more 'smiley' in nature than his usual material.
I think the video is one of Mike's better ones. The images he usually moves about can look amateurish or perhaps were just technology that dated quickly, but on this video I felt they were under control and in synch with the music.
On a shallower note, the straw hat he wears and the chess board image while he is guitaring works well for Mike. If I were him I'd have cultivated that.

A stupid question related to "Shine": Is it a love song for Mother Earth? To me it seems kind of obvious but stil Im thinking I might be wrong :/

I do like the song.
Especially the solo and Mikes cool oldfashioned hat in the vid.

Whats the song about?

Either mother nature/mother earth, or a woman (Anita) well, she was his wife/girlfriend at the time, right? (I'm probably not on that one)

Maybe it's about some other woman, or written when Mike fancied Anita?

I thought I knew, I have just proven myself wrong........

anyhoo, MEGA song imho  :D

I feel like a bad fan.  I don't know "Shine".  At least I don't think I do.  Where would I find this song?

After meeting Jon Anderson i feel more and more close to "Shine", he actually sing it a little for me when i meet him, and i will never ever ever never forget it.
That was he's first vocals when i menition about his work with Mike. "Ahhh SHINE! He hum it light and happy "darararaaaa" he he.."

Shine was and is for me a very happy good song. Its lovely to play in the summer. The music video is fine to watch at summer nights, with candles, red wine. I usually play the hole Elements dvd. (sounds like having Elements for years ha ha)
playing it on summer nights  ;)

I have no bad feelings for this Shine.
I actually hopes mike will use Jon sometimes to sing to a new song or single.

But how it looks today it seems like Robocop have better chance  to get that job....

I like Shine, it is happy.  I also like Flying Start.  It is very cheesy, but consistently cheesy and very convincing cheesy :). Shine is less cheesy than Flying Start to me.  But anyway I like both.  Not as pinnacle of art, but just happy songs :).

I like the way the "Shine, shine, I need her light, she's my light" part (more or less) follows the meldoy of the Abba cover "arrival".  Probably unintentional.

Concerning Anderson work:
I do like "owner of a lonely heart" and from Jon&Vangelis, I like "I'll find my way home" most.  Typical Vangelis with all the arpeggio bleeps, and rather cheesy, but I like it, also the solo in the middle :).

You got Jon to sing to you? Tell us more!

Where, when? I saw Jon a few times in my life, but never to speak to.

I like this song. LOL Jon's voice being what it is, I don't think it's the most awkward vocal track for him - but the guitar solo really gets me going every time. I think it's the most exuberant MO solo I've ever heard!  :D

It really is the cheeziest song imagineable and I'll always associate it with the video which is truly awful - but still compulsive viewing! I have to agree that technically the video was probably stunning for it's time as the music and images are remarkably in synch...

The song itself has lots of lovely musical touches, not least the cracking guitar solo and the whole end of the song is great and uplifting (if completely inane!;)

Actually it's really only the first verse that offends me much as the vocals are very awkward - the first "She was... Made in heaven... SheWasSheWas... Made in Heaven" is so cringeworthy then the "bombabombabom" going into the solo just sounds totally weird... but kinda cool at the same time!

Overall i can see so much that is wrong with it as a song but it still entertains me! So it gets my vote...!
