Rob Reed, maybe known by his concept album project "Kompendium" from 2012 will release his own Tubular Bells-like work Sanctuary on 21st July. No more words, listen yourself:

and this:

Tom Newman and Simon Heyworth supported that project in production and mastering.

The first preview via soundcloud sounds really interesting, lets wait for the whole thing. For the case,  that the result is something that a lot of us fans wish from Mike since decades - can you accept the fact that not Mike did it??

Yes it was what I heard on Soundcloud that piqued my interest. I certainly can accept the fact that Mike didn't do it, Mike has become so predictable and his playing so pedestrian that I would prefer someone younger to do it.

Heresy! Burn him!!

(OK, burn me too, as I agree!)

Anyway, this is good stuff, interesting that as a "tribute" it very much harks back to Mike's late 70s stuff, rather than anything later. Proof (if more were needed?!) that that was indeed the golden era??

It sounds to me more like a tribute to Incantations than one to Tubular Bells...  ;)

It sounds interesting but I don't know if i like it .
The idea reminds me of MO doing TB II, because tunes and textures of Sanctuary sound familiar in the same way and make you wonder if you've heard them in TB, Ommadawn, Incantations or In Dulci Jubilo or maybe Portsmouth.

It sounds very well played and produced. But for me it is TOO reminiscent of Oldfield's music. I'd like to hear some of Mr. Reed's music that comes from his own heart, not something explicitly aping the compositional techniques of 1970's Oldfield. Rob clearly has the talent to make an original piece of music that sounds like him and not so obviously an Oldfield imitation.

I get the sense from the 6 minute clip that this has been done before, and there seems to be an uneasy mixture of Incantations parts 3 and 4 with sections of Hergest Ridge and Ommadawn.

I will reserve full judgement until hearing the complete album, as it is unfair of me to judge it outside of that context.

This is great and I love it , but ?
Whats the point Robs making ?
This is Mikes music , he invented it , he recorded it and its Mikes sound , so why make a copy or tribute .
Is it that Rob knows we are Mike fans starved of his talent and want to relive 78/79 all over again and we will buy it .

Dont get me wrong I wish I could play like this but why would I buy it when I can play the originals all day long .

I have played the originals all day long so many thousand times that nowadays I have to let them go out into orbit, sometimes for up to a year or even more.

I am really looking forward to this, don't get me wrong, but some of it does sound a bit... stolen. Mike went after Paul Hardcastle for less IMO. :D Then again, not all of Mike's ideas were entirely his own either. Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Philip Glass...

Mike was for sure inspired by the great minimalist trio of Glass, Riley, and Reich. However, he evolved it into his own signature Oldfield sound. I think the argument here is that Rob hasn't taken inspiration so much from Oldfield's sound and evolved it into his own such as copied it (albeit very convincingly).

Here is an update, an interview with two fabulous short new snippets. I think we we should wait for the whole thing.

Mike sounds minimalist and modern while this guy sounds medieval. I'm much more into the minimalist stuff (although counterintuitively medieval melodies are more complex) so not my cup of tea.

Great! I will try to be there...sorry to have been away but it's tennis on Wednesdays at the moment so by the time I am back, showered, and had something to eat, the Joe Show is nearly over...

BTW, there is a good article about Rob in this month's Prog magazine, over and above the online version someone referenced above I think? Some interesting comments from Rob about the "first four" albums which pretty much chime with my way of thinking.
