Let´s get away from thinking in album sides only. There are bits and pieces of pre and post Exegesis recordings mixed all over.

The best example is Mikes solo on part 4 prior to the Hiawatha section which differs very much from the tranquil type recordings after Exegesis. This has been definitely recorded before the therapy.

I have to track down that interview (I think it was the one with Karl Dallas). I'm quite positive it's parts 1 and 4 that he said was the "new" parts. I'll be back...

That's a very good point!

I read that Karl Dallas interview again, and I was slightly wrong (in a way...). Mike doesn't say he recorded pts 1 & 4 last, but he says the only things that aren't "rubbish" is "the flute solo" (he must mean the one at the end of pt 1) and "the vibraphone solo in part 4 and the guitar solo that comes after the vibraphone solo". He says that these (three) things are the only examples of "me expressing myself" (i.e. post-exegesis - obvious in the context).

What strikes me is that the things Mike mentions are the most "thought out" and mathematically oriented melodies on the whole album!

Another thought;
Isn't it possible that Incantations was based on outtakes from the Reflections movie score? It's easy to say that Mike "used" pieces of Incantations - but did Incantations even exist as an idea in 1976?
I find it fascinating that in 1976 it wasn't just the musical ideas for Incantations that existed, but some of the actuall backing tracks were already recorded. It would have been the obvious thing to do - to re-record the whole piece in 1977/78, but Mike seemed to compile already recorded sections to form the whole of Incantations (as someone said earlier here). If that was the working method, it's incredible how coherent the whole thing sounds!

That´s just the way Mike used to record his albums for a long time. He picks up on melodies he came up with and uses them on one or the other album. So there are parts of what used to become Platinum as well as parts used for Incantations being developed around the same time.

To me that´s whats really exciting about his music - seeing the developments through various stages. There are so many examples like using the same drum pattern on Moonlight Shadow and Man In The Rain or the demos on Islands/When The Nights On Fire or Fed Up Fed Up/Gimme Back and so on.

I'm tempted to view that re-cycling of the Moonlight Shadow drumtrack as sheer laziness  :/ Isn't there a track on TB3 that samples Shadow on the Wall as well?

I think there's some connection between the Lake, Wind Chimes and Amarok. I think you can almost here Amarok coming to life in the first two.

|Who is the contact for asking this question at the arts council?

The downloads of the demo's are no longer active. Could someone re-upload them? I'd love to hear it.

Well, nobody did this before so here you have the lyrics for Space Movie. They are a poem called Spell of Creation by Kathleen Raine.

Within the flower there lies a seed,
Within the seed there springs a tree,
Within the tree there spreads a wood.

In the wood there burns a fire,
And in the fire there melts a stone,
Within the stone a ring of iron.

Within the ring there lies an O,
Within the O there looks an eye,
In the eye there swims a sea.

And in that sea reflected sky,
And in the sky there shines the sun,
Within the sun a bird of gold.

Within the bird there beats a heart,
And from the heart there flows a song,
And in that song there sings a word.

In the word there speaks a world,
A word of joy, a world of grief,
From joy and grief there springs my love.

[This is missing part in the lyrics:
Oh love, my love, there springs a world,
And on the world there shines a sun,
And in the sun there burns a fire,]

Within the fire consumes my heart
And in my heart there beats a bird,
And in the bird there wakes an eye,

Within the eye, earth, sea and sky,
Earth, sky and sea within an O
Lie like the seed within the flower.

You didn't do anything wrong, it's just that that file hosting service I had used doesn't seem to work anymore.

I uploaded it again.
Here it is.

Very interesting stuff.  It would be wonderful for the outtake bits to get a proper release someday.

I don't get the poem. A wood fire is not hot enough to melt stone or iron. A bird made of gold could not fly, so how could it ever achieve escape velocity to leave Earth for the Sun? Once there, the gold would be vaporized by the heat long before it even reached the corona. What was the bird's method of propulsion in a vaccuum? There's nothing to flap against, assuming gold wings could flap. Please explain.
