During the glory days of the first Napster, I obtained a couple of Incantations demo tracks.

The first one is a different version of one of the parts in Side 4, between the Long Bells and "Queen and Huntress". It includes the lyric "make way for the strange ones". I read somewhere that this was part of work Oldfield did for a soundtrack for a friend's art film or documentary.

The other track is of the same section, but a different version, with lyrics that you can't understand. This is the version that appears in "Space Movie". In "Space Movie", When the astronaut says "American Cheese", this unreleased music ends and music actually on the Incantations album release begins. (I call this track "American Cheese" for this reason, just as I call the first one "The Strange Ones"). The track I have sounds a little different from the "Space Movie" version, but I think it is the same thing.

My main questions:

1) Is this documentary or art film available anyhow, anywhere (I'm sure the next reply will have the name of it, and I will likely edit this message to include the name)

2) Is there other unreleased Incantations-related music on this soundtrack?

Didn't find this in the FAQ.....

Yes, there's a film called Reflections, made for the British Arts Council, which contains a number of otherwise unreleased pieces by Mike.

I believe it is in theory still available from the Arts Council, but at a fairly steep price, as they make each copy individually. Some fans have looked into getting small runs of it done for other fans, but it's never come to anything, presumably due to lack of interest.
As I remember, the most represented of Mike's albums on the soundtrack, as far as unreleased variations go, is Ommadawn.

Hi

Just a brief note from me to say thanks to Hiawatha for sending me links to these tracks.

I notice that right at the start of the first piece I could hear the tail end of The Path which was also donated to the Reflections project, so this would support the theory that this indeed is the source for this track.

I've heard a different variation of the second track before, but this had the Space Movie section blended in with the same section as it appears on the Incantations album.  It also featured vocals not found on the Incantations album.

Don't get too excited peoples, I'm disappearing again for a while now!  ;)

Love, beer, and cheese,

I uploaded it:

Reflection Soundtrack

The extension should be renamed to mp3!

I ripped it out from a relatively low quality video so don't expect much.

I wonder if anyone recognizes that early Platinum part 15 minutes into the soundtrack. It's a quite interesting version of the same melody with totally different feel to it.

Theres really some beautiful music on this soundtrack - the aforementioned Platinum Pt2 demo is amazing as is the unknown piece that follows it... Very subtle and minimalist by Mike's standards.
The Ommadawn and Incantations demo pieces really make you wonder what's sitting in the archives... They are recognisable but very gentle stripped down versions of familiar themes. I'd love to hear a good quality version of this stuff without the annoying man talking all over the top of it!!

Thanks Eeton for getting this online....

Some time ago, I thought the "Reflections original sound track" could be included inside "The Platinum Collection" but Virgin/Emi don´t think so.
Reflections deserves to be published.

I don't know if they have control over it as much as Mike does, and even more the artist and the British Arts Council that has the rights to the "Reflection" film.

I think this is something more complicated than (let's say) Virgin releasing the Exposed DVD which contained regular concerts of regular Virgin albums.

Is there any evidence that Mike Oldfield likes to take an active role in making obscure very old work available?

The aforementioned Platinum Pt. 2 track played on Piano can also be seen in a short sequence on the documentary of "All You Need Is Love" by Tony Palmer, orginally shown in 1977.

It´s available on the net under "The Making of Ommadawn". It´s a great documentary and it shows an early version of Ommadawn as well.

Look for my theory on the Ommadawn forum.

Thanks EeToN for uploading the soundtrack.
Although I did buy the tape of Reflection from The Arts Council, I have not heard it for many years. It contains some important music that demonstrates the transition phase from Ommadawn to Incantations. Some sections seem to have emerged from the Ommadawn demo stage and this includes the piano bit that ended up on Platinum. Other sections may also date from this time (Spring 1975) - No.4 & 7 in the list above - sound like they could be from an Ommadawn session.

After Ommadawn, Mike could not start recording fresh material until his new studio was built at Througham (in January 1976 he did some tracks with Les Penning using The Manor Mobile) and Portsmouth is included in the film. We also get First Excursion, recorded in August 1976, and this is the springboard for Incantations as No 14 demonstrates beautifully. I think all the music for the film had been completed by early December 1976 as, in an interview Mike gave at the time, he talks about it as being "done".

Bonus tracks on the soundtrack are The Path and Woodhenge, the latter showing Mike's growing interest in tuned percussion. So creatively, there was a lot going on during this period despite no futher album release until late 1978.

Another thing.
Do I detect that Track No. 17 (listed above) is a bit slower than its eventual Incantations counterpart? It seems more than half the speed - probably three quarters the speed. So did Mike use tape speed adjustments or did he re-record that section a little more uptempo.

The rest of the music appears at what I would say was the correct speed. Any comments?

When you think of it, isn't it odd that pts 3 and 4 of Incantations were recorded already in early 1976, 2 1/2 years before the release of Incantations? Especielly strange since Mike said in an interview that pts 1 & 4 four were the things he recorded after the exegesis thing (and that they were the only parts he was satisfied with).

Also, it's been said that there are HR demos on the Reflections soundtrack. Could any of the "?"-pieces HR outtakes?

Third, the vibra-slap sounds really weird without reverb on it!  :/

I can't see that parts 3 and 4 were recorded this early.  I always thought that parts 1 and 2 were the pre-exegesis sides and that 3 and 4 were the post-exegesis sides.  Have I got it wrong?  Anyway I thought Mike said he was only happy with sides 3 and 4 and that these were recorded last.

I can't believe he'd have sat on Incantations so long.

Anyone know for sure?
