I can't remember where I read this; but apparently, for the guitar solo at the end of part 1, the young Mike had pictures of page 3 models scattered about his studio.
I've long suspected that, for the heart of his guitar solo at that point, Mike may have been saying in his head "F**k her, f**k her, f**k her.
This is very crude and maybe wholly wrong.
But, for me, it makes sense.
(I'm in my 50s; the heat of sex has dampened; but I remember it well)

I don't like to dampen your fantasy here, but my reading of this is quite different.

If that guitar solo is inspired by the birth trauma that Mike faced a few years later through the Exegesis course, then I think the porn mags are likely to have been the more distasteful graphic kind that someone at that time aptly described as "like a butcher's shop floor."  I suspect that guitar solo has nothing to do with sex and everything to do with a horrific focus on the basics of the female human body and the raw fact of the birth canal.

Without wanting to sound like an expert, both the more tasteful and the more graphic and potentially distasteful kinds of porn mags would have been freely available at the time, and tended to turn up without you having to have bought them - left by previous tenants, handed around openly.

I can certainly imagine a musician using a more congenial form of porn as atmosphere when recording (though I've never actually tried that myself), but I don't think the end of side one of Ommadawn is that kind of reflection.

I'd be interested to see what other people here - probably much more knowledgeable than me about Mike Oldfield - have to say about this.

Thanks for your thoughts, Sweep.
Of course, we may both be completely wrong.
And the one guy who knows is unlikely to want to go into details - and I think hates "why" type questions about his music anyway.
I guess the main thing is - he has given us a fantastic piece of music, one I've loved for 40 years.
And I'm delighted to hear he is working on a new piece, using instruments from this period.

Rather than sex, it's about birth. Mike once said that 'The end of the first side of Ommadawn is the sound of me exploding from my mother's vagina.'

Interesting connection in the FAQ ... ;) :

http://tubular.net/faq/#3.20

3.20  What has been the most outrageous use of Mike's music ?

Probably the use of Ommadawn as the background music in an xxx-rated adult film. Approximately 10 minutes of Ommadawn were used in a pornographic film called "Pandora's Mirror", directed by Warren Evans in 1981.

Evans was clearly a big fan of Ommadawn, as he also used the whole of Part 1 in his 1983 film "Hot Dreams". The scene involved two couples on a pleasure boat engaging in various forms of sex. It takes place outside, during the day, while they are cruising around Manhattan Island. The only thing you hear during the scene is Ommadawn since once the scene got going, all other sound was eliminated. The scene takes place at the end of the movie and ends exactly when Ommadawn ends. Here is the pertinent info:

TITLE: Hot Dreams
YEAR MADE: 1983
DIRECTOR: Warren Evans
MAIN STARS: Sharon Mitchell, Michael Bruce, Tiffany Clark, Jaime Gillis
MADE BY: Caballero Home Video

All the above info is necessary to distinguish it from any other movie which might have the same title.
