I think Mikes main problem in releasing a compilation is that
the 1st 4 big hit Albums are all long pieces ... As the previous
posters mentioned this requires taking out the best bits
and sort of trying to meld them together into a running order
on the Best of Discs.. I already have 4 of these things already.
The Essential Mike Oldfield XXV is an example of this.. Its
great for a  Driving CD but hardly ever played otherwise..I would imagine this and "Elements" sold in large enough amounts to encourage the release of  the Platinum Collection
at a Punter friendly price.. Not sure how well this one will do
though as Time Marches on and the Older Fans have either
disappeared or moved on... Might do well in Spain ..  Yeah
the "Bell" cover is a trademark I guess but not sure its
that relevant now to the current Youngsters who just might
look at it and think mmm whats that ?? Maybe a Guitar
based Logo might have more Impact to the Casual Browser I
think this is aimed at ..

maybe the bell should be something else..

what about red?
or green??
or blue??

I think it's meant to be platinum, isn't it? This being the Platinum Collection and all...

I agree that the cover does not look good. There's a LOT of the CD/album/LP cover art for Oldfield albums AND compilations that I love. This is not up to the standards.

Well, i see what he means... platinum collection... platinum is a form of grey or shiny white gold kind of colour... somewhere in between those two.

Here's my take on what the album art should be:

Well, just bought the album from my local recordstore.

Lovely compilation, though bit dissapointing (we can never be happy, can't we?). The booklet has some new information (and some mistakes) and a picture of Mike I've never seen before and a picture of Mike at Knebworth. Mike says in the booklet that "Millenium Bell was hated by fans for some reason". Duh... there are some lovely tracks on it Mike, but the title track is just absolutely dreadful: not YOUR style!

What bothers me is what was said before: Don Alfonso is indeed a mono track, probably ripped from the videoclip of the tremendous Exposed DVD. William Tell Overture is from the remastered Elements Box, with the same annoying cracks and pops. Also, most of the extended versions are probably from old tapes, so I can hear some cracks and pops on it too. A shame, the quality could have sounded so much better. Even tracks like Evacuation have cracks in the sound, even though it was clean in the remastered album. Shame on the people responsible for it!

Also, I hate it that EMI advertises with ringtones on the cd artwork. Damn this mobile phone and ringtones atmosphere in this age. :(

And of course the dissapointing cover...

But I'm still glad I've got Shine extended version on cd!! :)

...wow... Have to correct myself: I'm so glad Islands, Flying Start, The Time Has Come, Shine, Guilty extended versions are on cd! They really sound good!

Innocent 12" and Earth Moving were released on cd single, but still great to be on this compilation.

CD 3 is by far the best on this compilation :)

I have just been told, on MSN (by a non Mike Oldfield fan, thus not much detail) that 'Platinum collection' appeared on television on Channel 4 today :)

Really looking forward to getting this now. Why, oh why are Amazon so slow at sending stuff out? I pre-ordered and the availability said 'usually despatched within 24 hours'. Er, I don't think so: it hasn't even entered the despatch process yet  :/

Mine has finally entered despatch at Cd-Wow, which still insists the release date is March 20. Wonder if it'll get here before April...

Woo-hoo! Got it today. A bit disappointed that the version of Shine is not the one on the Elements DVD but you can't have everything. I really like the 12" mix of Innocent and the extended version of To France is quite nice as well. And to have Pictures in the Dark on CD makes the whole thing worthwhile on its own. Tremendous  :)

Got it at at my usual shop today, which, I must admit, is very unusual for these kinds of products. :) I don't think the cover is as bad as it may look when watching a jpeg on a computer screen :D... to me it looks nice, especially within the transparent box that the three CDs are housed in.
Regarding the music... well...

CD 1 - Almost useless for true fans like me. :) However, I'd never heard the remasters of Platinum Part 4 and Woodhenge before now, and they sound much better than the original.

CD 2 - Great sound, great choice of tracks... and, of course, great idea - i.e. featuring the "hits" in their 12'' mixes. ;)

CD 3 - What can I say? It's the reason why I bought the set.
PITD, Flying Start, Islands, Earth Moving (Club version)...
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhh! Pure delight!!!! :D

I totally agree with you!!
I bought it yesterday, and it's great to have heard the mixes of Flying Start and Time Has Come for the first time...
I never heard those... and the cover and booklet looks very nice after all... it's a very good compilation...
good to bring with you on holidays and in the train :)
