Most people here seem to hate the joke voiceover on this demo whereas I've said I like it. I have listened a few more times to try and identify any *reason* (why Matt, why! ) for me liking it and got as far as the following, which you will notice reinforces for me another link between Ommadawn and Amarok!

In Amarok, from 3:40ish to 4:30ish, there are a sequence of sharp stabs  and other sounds designed to jolt and make you uncomfortable. Amongst other feelings at this point I tend to have a feeling of tension but also of anticipation. That is followed at 5:00 by - well you know, something kinda enormously fantastic! Maggie has an almost similar effect during the final climax for me.

When the voiceover in the Ommadawn lost demo starts, it is a jolt from the beautiful drumming and vocals, wrenches me away from a nice place and makes me a bit uneasy. Then I find some of the phrases amusing (Rough! ) and enjoy listening to it for a bit. After that it starts to get repetitive and I start to tense up, but as with Amarok, I am getting a sense of *anticipation* combined with the uneasiness which is exciting. This builds as the jokes continue to a palpable, physical (for me) tightning and tensing of my body as the climax approaches. Then, as with Amarok, there is a short slight lull as the voices quieten before *BAM* I'm smacked around the head by literally breathtaking gorgeousness and power. I feel the tension before the climax enhances the climax itself which is why I like it.

This may not be at all what Mike intended with the voiceover and may not  happen for anyone else but that's what I think is going on with me!  Maybe I need help ;)

As a lot of people don't speak English very well here (like me!;), could anyone tell us what this voiceover is saying in this lost version please?

:)

I like the joke voiceover as I can imagine Mike creating it dubbing in bloke 1 and then bloke 2 as a bit of a laugh (probably thinking about the sailors hornpipe section with Viv that got cut out of the Tubular Bells release).  I like the whole thing because it is clearly a work in progress and Mike putting together ideas for the album.  I can see why Mike was upset when he lost it and had to rerecord it because it was a beautiful recording.  The joke section would have never made it to the final version and I think Mike was probably mucking around with ideas, but I am glad it was included here because it shows some of his thought processes and how he worked.  Joke section aside I think this recording has a raw beauty and is very emotional, on balance I prefer the polished nature of the final release but I am very pleased to hear this lost version as well.

I'm not able to give a straight transcription right now, but it's a series of surreal, nonsense variations on the traditional English "I say I say I say" joke.  In these jokes person 1 will say that phrase followed by a question.  Person 2 will then reply by saying they don't know, why?  Person 1 then delivers the punchline.

In Mike's drunken take the questions become increasingly more and more eccentric, and the 'punchlines' less and less sensible.

Nice idea.....in theory at least!

Thanks.Yeah both are Mike.Even doing this silly accent he has a very distinctive voice. He over dubbed them to make them sound like 2.Clearly he's been at the bottle himself.
Yannick emailed me yesterday to ask me to do this so,never one to turn down a challenge,i sat down with pen and paper at around midnight last night.

So do i get the award?

Good work Caveman!

Q: What's got two hands and no eyes?
A: A Clock.

Q: What's got four legs and one arm?
A: A Rottweiler.

Q: What's got two eyes, two belly buttons and two legs?
A: Two pirates.

Q: What's got twelve legs and one eye?
A: Three blind mice and half a kipper.

Q: What’s got four legs and one foot?
A: A bed.

I haven't found any that have bottles or wheels in them yet...

Thanks again to Mr Dan for this job....

Just one thing....A Spanish fan is not sure that the voices belong to Mike.
Dan, how can you be sure they belong to him?

:)

Listen to any interview.Definately got that slightly nasal Reading twang with a touch of Essex. Also listen to On Horse Back.Definately Mike.Besides he worked on this version more or less alone. And it isn't Les Penning cos i have one of his solo albums and he sounds much more upper class!

William Murray lived at The Beacon for most of the album recording... but it isn't him either. I'd say it was Mike with a "ruff" voice.

BTW, anyone found another bit of a "lost" version on the DVD menu? Never heard that before.
