Mojo magazine (October 2009 Issue 191) has a detailed 6 page article on Mike Oldfield, focussing on the creation of Tubular Bells. Mat Snow writes about the making of the album including interviews with Mike, David Bedford and Tom Newman.

Just re-read the article, The last couple of paragraphs are fairly upbeat I thought. I particularly like the penultimate paragraph where Mike says, referring to his back catalogue:

"From time to time on the albums there have been moments of original intensity, but nothing like the first one." "Though you never know - I'm perfectly capable of making another piece of music as good if not better than Tubular Bells. As I've got older I've become more balanced, so perhaps I won't. If you want to do something special, you have to suffer for your art - who's ever heard of a happy artist? It's just a question of whether I get the inspiration - the big e-mail. At least I've had the honour of being the conduit to something as good as that first album."

Hmmmmmm, Mike really thinks he is still capable of creating something even better than TB given the right inspiration? Bring it on!

According to wikipedia it seems to be a weird practice mostly just in the UK and US. Never made any sense to me either! :/

It's got more to do with when the issue will be on sale to.Usually about 6 weeks in advance.
Got the issue.Pretty good really i thought.I particuarly liked the the "snivelling wretch" description but not as much as i liked the description of Branson as "The mumbling jumper".That made me laugh out loud!

This is directed DIRECTLY TO MIKE:

Mike, actually, many of us don't really understand what you are talking about here. There are (IMHO), overall seen, just as many original spiritual BRILLIANT moments on your other long instrumentals as on Tubular Bells. Surely, TB is great, most of it. And I reckon, the very making of it gives you a very special feeling for it.

But from a pure musical perspective, it is really difficult to argue that pieces like Ommadawn, Incantations, Amarok, Distant Earth, not to mention Music of the Spheres are not of the same quality as TB. Even The Lake, Crisis, Wind Chimes, have extraordinary excerpts and would easily stand beside most parts on TB.

E.g., "Fast Guitars" versus "Let There Be Light": are they comparable? If yes, why is the former superior to the latter?? I simply don't get it, Mike.

Your stuff is highly creative, from 1973 to 2008. Most of it!

MOTS is your best so far, by the way!!!!!!!! Be f-n proud! Shabda rules

The following letter has appeared in the Letters page of November's Mojo (Issue 192, pages 11-12).  It's from a John Paige of Washington DC, USA, and tells of how TB came to be used in The Exorcist:

"Thanks for the article on Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells.  I was a DJ at an underground radio station (Georgetown University's WGTB-FM) in 1973 when they were filming The Exorcist on campus and around Georgetown.  Being enthused about prog and all music Canterbury-related (and having followed Kevin Ayre's Whole World), I received an advance copy of Tubular Bells from the newly minted Virgin Records, and was delighted to find out I had the only copy in the area.  The story I heard was that William Friedkin (The Exorcist director) was unhappy with the score provided by Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece (an early electronic ensemble based in Ithaca, NY) and was looking for something to replace it with.  Enter Peter Blatty (son of William Peter Blatty, author of the book and on hand during the filming).  Peter was attending the University at the time and told his dad about this music he'd heard on the underground radio station which would be perfect for the movie.  Blatty Sr told Friedkin about it, the underground music became overground, and an empire was born."
