Can we have (or accumulate in this thread maybe) some notes on codes that can be used in posts.

for instance the codes for the buttons listed in "ib Code Buttons" when putting your post together such as

[ B ] in bold [ / B ] (without the spaces next to the brackets) puts text in bold

the codes for smileys such as : ) for :)

and also others that I didn't know about such as

[ list ][ * ]item 1
[ * ]item 2
[ * ]item 3
[ /list ]

to create a list like this

 • item 1
 • item 2
 • item 3

What else is there?

Replying to your own post is a bit sad but further thoughts are:

I feel there should really be a topic under "help" about formatting posts, use of codes etc.

How about we draft it in this thread? Accumulate info on what codes can be used and try and find the clearest way to present them in a help topic. Then request the admins to add the help topic based on the info and formatting that has accumulated?

For a start, I think the use of spaces to describe the sequence of codes works well.

Hmmm, bit more playing around and it seems there are lots of things you can do:

you can make text bigger

try different fonts such as times

change text colour to red, green etc.

and of course combinations such as

Amarok is the greatest. An example which shows exactly why these features shouldn't always be used and also why I don't work in graphic design ;-)

Would any of this help in any of the posts on the site - probably not which is why these features aren't advertised or used much!

No responses from anybody? Is it just me that is curious about these features? Oh well, back to talking to myself  :D

There is an alternate way, and that is to bookend your code with [ code ][ /code ], but without the spaces. So that posting red text would show as this:

Code Sample
posting red text

Thanks Sweetpea.

I've just realised that most of this stuff is already present in the links below where you type (Help Cards on Emoticons and iB Code). Feeling a bit of a pillock for never spotting them before after 747 posts here! They don't mention the list and bullet bits though...

Doooh!  :O

Well, I think those help cards could certainly be expanded on. I've so far restrained myself from using the font color and size codes. Can you imagine the disruption I could cause in the Tr3s Lunas forum?
Sweetpea  thoughtfully taps her chin while wondering just how large fonts can get

Goodness. I don't think I'll be using that code again.  :O

One thing I've noticed is that some smileys exist in old posts that seem to no longer be available.

For instance if you look at this thread you can see the fourth post in the thread contains two smileys:

: rolleyes :

and

: frown :

Which show correctly looking at the original post but can't be reproduced in new posts. Weird! :O

Just testing to see if I can get the rolleyes smiley to work another way. Lets see: using [ img ] /forums/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif [ /img ] we get

hmmm nearly, Any others?

cry.gif =
thumbs=up.gif =
satisfied.gif =
inlove.gif =

but I still can't find the rolleyes I'm after. Oh well, enough for now!

Edit: Gotcha!
sarcasm.gif =
sad.gif =

The format suggests any HTML expression may be used. Experiment and see!The worst that can happen is that the moderators will be vexed!

LOL lots of possibilities. Could be quite fun to experiment with! Still prefer to read posts in black text (easy on the eye)! However coloured text and varying font size emphasise points in a post! Important, cause text can be interpreted many ways via the web. Not like a regular conversation. However Tubes have shown their expertise when posting! Quite an eclectic mix, and always entertaining! More smiles...sometimes they fit perfectly for what you want to express rather than a few words...

You can do Invisitext for spoilers or answers to questions:
[ color=transparent ] The answer in invisitext [ /color ] (without all the spaces next to the brackets! )

E.g.

Q: How many roads must a man walk down?
A (Invisitext, highlight to read): Forty Two!

Edit: The above code (if you highlight to the right of "...highlight to read):" it should show the text "Forty two") doesn't seem to work on all systems e.g. some Macs so I'm gonna avoid it until I've investigated further!

OK, a bit more context to that post maybe ;)

I'd been thinking how best to have the Mastermind questions and answers posted assuming people are interested after tomorrows programme with Mike as the specialist subject. If people want to try the questions themselves it'd be useful to have the answers hidden in some way.

One way I've seen this done on other forums is to use "Invisitext", a term for having text hidden on the page until you select it (as though you were going to copy it or edit it) when it then becomes visible. Good for spoilers as well (for instance talking about a film but including a comment that might give away the ending, people sometimes give a spoiler warning and also put the spoiler text in Invisitext).

Make any more sense yet?
