In Australia they're currently using that in an anti-smoking TV commercial. Hearing such a bright cheerful song against a background of grotesque cancerous images creates a bizarre and disturbing effect.

The arbitrariness of pop criticism is particularly evident with regard to this song: it's derided as "bubble gum", whereas an equally vacuous piece of pop - "Honey Honey" by Abba - is treated with veneration! Personally, I prefer The Archies!

And when people say the like glamrock they're not talking about Hector!

Number 1 single was Hey Jude by The Beatles. In terms of albums, Delilah by Tom Jones knocked Bookends by Simon & Garfunkel off the top spot the day I was born.

The first number 1 single I can actually remember was Hot Love by T.Rex, mainly because my parents had a copy and I was slightly scared by the Fly label!

I don't know if it's my dirty mind but isn't there's a huge difference between "the doggie in the window" and "doggie in the window"?

The next verse - about leaving the sweetheart alone with the dog - is even worse!

This all-time classic was number one as I arrived, and their single Eleanor Rigby was number one in the Top 40. Sadly England have never won the Fifa World Cup in my lifetime, I popped out a few weeks too late. Still, my beloved England are officially the greatest cricket nation on Earth, the other 9! trail in our wake...
