Personally, I think The Lake or at least pieces of it would be nice to hear. Or Incantations maybe. Or Hergest Ridge.

Or hey Platinum!! That would be a fun one.

Well, yeah, great ideas! Especially the Lake, but the other ones, aren't they a bit too hard/difficult, and too orchestral (incantations)...? and with weird instruments...
If you do a pop-song, they usually have a more traditional line-up of guitars/keyboards/drums/bass and vocals... Maybe that's a bit easier...  :)
(for example Moonlight Shadow, like jonny says...)

Yah it'd be easier, but where's the fun in that?  :p Plus the more orchestration of instruments there are, the more people can participate!

Seriously though, I suppose you're right. Platinum wouldn't be too hard, though. It's pretty simple compared to the rest of his discography.

My little joke about being in the kazoo-chorus or being water-glass drinker has evolved into a little more serious point.

If this project ends up being "Amarok" or "TSODE" related, I was wondering if there would be room for those of us who are interested in participating, but not really good enough on musical instruments, to contribute noises/effects/ etc?

I think if it was Amarok, that would give a great, big opportunity for people to develop some real creativity - not that I'm implying people don't have that usually - but when we did Finale, we stuck more or less slavishly to the original... Amarok would be a great opportunity to be a bit more "loose", because to cover Amarok, I really don't think it is necessary to stick slavishly to every little detail - any number of things could fit in there.

Just a few random thoughts inspired by Hiawatha's post above.

Of course there's also nothing to say that more than two groups of people can operate on two seperate projects at once. If jonnyw groups with a few people to do something, then perhaps the remainder can still contribute to another project?

Yeah, that's ok, but I think that Oldfield songs have very much instuments on them, so then it won't be a problem having 3 or 4 guitars participating, as there's always rhythm guitar, some melody playing guitars, and then another person can do the solo, and so on...
It would be nicest to do one track altogether...
so maybe a track with space for musical creativity, like Holger says, but also vocals...

Musically inspired: I agree that we should do a song that a lot of people can participate on! That it would really be a product of us all, joining forces, sticking together and all that talk  :D !!!!

Hiawatha: Of course people who are not too familiar with a specific instrument should be able to join, be it in contributing (sampled) noises or backing vocals or remember the great background voices from Orabidoo...
That way you don't have to stick to every note of the original, like Holger says!

Anyway, I think we maybe need to make a list of people who are willing to contribute to jonny's project...

Man I'm enjoying this...

:)

Oh Man, I have never wanted to be able to play a musical instrument more than I do right now. I can't even sing, but I can brush my teeth! and drop things!

Amarok would be great for those of us who can't play who would like to be involved but it sounds near impossible to me. I would esp love to hear Platinum parts 1 to 4 because I don't think it has been done before, it is such an underrated piece of music. Can anyone play the trumpet?

OK i know this defys the rules of democracy... but noone really voted, so im going to say this.... piltdownboy and i have discussed, we'd like to do the bell from tb2 as a homage to the fine work done on finale. We'd like to have each of the musicians be the master of ceremonies, everyone introduces an instrument each.. we hope you like the idea, i reccomend listening to it again while reading this!

thanks everyone in advance who are willing to join in!

The Lake has potential for a theremin solo...

That's probably a good reason not to do it, really ;)

I'll keep the squeaky Margaret Thatcher ready just in case you decide to do something from Amarok.

For those of us with great toothbrushing talent (like TubularBelle), how about a Theramed solo?

I'd like to get a hold of a glockenspiel, but I doubt that I will.

was listening to discovery........

would tricks of the light not be a better idea to demo, and see if it works? arron can sing the male parts, i know a singer quite like maggie reilly and sally oldfeild, yet more higher pitched, might make the chorus sound even better.. should we have a bash at it, then do the bell for our final peice?
