So i was sitting on the bus on my way home yesterday and i was listening to moonlight shadow, and i was thinking about how my band never does covers, and neither do i on my own tracks. But it seems everyone here seems to be making their own covers on their own. I personally dont like covering tracks, i find more enjoyment in writing my own... but thats beside the point..

I was thinking... if i could get any musicians that wantd to join me to record one instrument each by themselves.. of any mike song that we'd decide on.. they send it to me and i mix them, and voila! we'd have a cover project for us all to join in on.. thered have to be one of each instrument, but ya no, its possible if we all listen to the same song so as to be sure of the same tempo.

Its probably been done before, but it would be fun even though.

Oh dibs on guitar by the way!!!!!

It has been done before with the Tubuar Bells finale, but it would be nice to do it again with a differant piece and differant musicains. Maby something with a lot of differant instruments and longer like part of Amarok. I could play melodica or aeromodelers control box or something.

If you need a participant in a kazoo chorus for a cover of "Hibernaculum", you know where to look.

For the Amarok project, I can drink a glass of water with the best of them, and I might have a wind-up toy dog around somewhere.

THis is a great idea!! I already talked about it with sonilink via msn, but I see that he said that also!! Thanks! Sonilink sent me some voiceclips, including some guitar parts, so the guitar parts won't be any trouble!! And I already know who'll be one of the singers ;) (arron)
And of course Korgscrew and Incanta will be the 'masters of ceremonies' ;)

You have to put the bass-amplifier into the computer then... don't you...
Well I'm sure the technical side can be fixed!!

Great idea!
I'd like to be the bassplayer then!! But, if there are other people on this forum who play bass, we can each do a verse or something...
but this'll work out!!

:D

If we do something like 'discovery' I'll be happy to do male vocals.

How come I always end up getting dragged into things like this? ;)

You have to put the bass-amplifier into the computer then... don't you...

If it has a line-level output, that's certainly not a bad way of doing it. Sometimes amps' circuitry can be a bit noisy, so it would be good to listen hard for hiss and buzzes, but other than that, it's a good idea.

Plugging directly into a line/mic input isn't such a good idea, as it can sound rather weak and flat. A DI box is a good thing to use if you want to record direct, and a lot of multi effects units can also be used for it.

There's also nothing wrong with miking up the bass amp, if you like the sound of the cabinet you have and you have a suitable microphone (it needs to have a decent response down to at least 40Hz though). You can always combine a direct and a miked signal, if you want. A direct signal's often an especially good idea with 5 string bass, as many bass cabinets aren't actually capable of properly handling frequencies as low as the low B (which is around 31Hz).

If you want to do any processing on the sound, I'd recommend also keeping an unprocessed version which you can send to the person doing the mix (looks like that's jonnyw in this case...I hope you know what you're letting yourself in for, Jonny ;)) - it's always incredibly frustrating having to battle against someone else's choice of processing just to get a part to sit correctly in the track.

As far as bass parts go, I'd suggest keeping the tone control fully open, and not doing any EQ (or at least not much) on the amp. It's really tempting to think that bass should be bassy, but it really needs the higher frequencies (mostly in the midrange actually) if it's going to really be heard in the mix, and it's damned hard to brighten up a sound which has had all the top end rolled off at the recording stage (EQ won't help unless there's something there to boost).

Enough of that though...I'm around if you want me. I'll make sure I keep track of what's going on here! Good luck!

Just a quick reply to let you know that even the members who do not play any instrument (like yours truly) will find this a great idea.

I, for one, am looking forward to the result.

I feel that the lake would be a good idea, a shortened version (6-8minutes?) :)

I only meant the drums as a minor part ;)

We need someone who can play wind instruments for the (newly shortened) beginning :)

First of all, we need to decide:

a.What we want to play
b.What instruments we need / think we can get away with not having
c.Who we're gonna ask to fill each role (musician, mixer, etc)

I personally feel that as this was jonnyw's idea, and he wanted to mix it, he should be doing the mixing. If this was a small project, then maybe we can double up - I could possibly play piano if we have enough time for me to practice it again, but I'm willing to bet there's someone on here that can do it better.

Apart from Discovery that Arron and I already mentioned, maybe these songs can be options:
Crime of Passion (vocal song with nice instrumentation and solo), or
Moonlight Shadow, or
Tricks of the Light (if we can find also a female singer), or maybe
Heaven's open...

but I'm really curious to other opinions!!

:)

Personally, I think The Lake or at least pieces of it would be nice to hear. Or Incantations maybe. Or Hergest Ridge.

Or hey Platinum!! That would be a fun one.
