Hi all,

It's been a long time since I posted here, but I've never lost my love of Mike's music, and I was recently lucky enough to be invited along as a guest on my friend's podcast "The European Perspective" to talk about his music, his life and more besides!

A panel of three of us (myself, record label boss David Elliott and musician Jon Hunt) discuss Mike's music in chronological order, play tracks from every album and some rarities along the way.

Part 1 (1973-1982) is up now at the link below, and can also be found on itunes and other good podcast vendors. Part 2 (1983-present) will come soon!

The European Perspective - Mike Oldfield special part1

Awesome, thank you! Do let us know what you think...

If you're a real Oldfield nut there might not be anything you've never heard before, but there are some tracks that most people don't know about.

We tried to go into our thoughts on each album as we went through, but with such a large body of work to get through, inevitably some albums get shorter discussions than others!

Enjoying it so far, empathising with the stories of how we all discovered Mike's music. And thumbs up to whoever said Incantations was their favourite album!

Compared to Mike's other superb albums, Incantations is a pretentious wank - its letters even unscramble to "onanist antic"

OK Nightspore, time to come off the fence, tell us what you *really* think! ;)

I don't sit on fences in case they turn out to have pickets! Avoid the spike.

I take it "Downwind" is a new piece, rather than a warning to those in the presence of those who say "I like beer and I like cheese"   Is there any chance you can post a link to it alone?

By the way your avatar of an old tin box seems calculated to annoy Mr O. :D

In the middle of this, up to Exegesis.
Real interesting views although I don't think Virgin records had any input on Hergest Ridge.
What's everyone got against part 2 of Incantations? Love the small choir stuff at the start and the 10 mins of hypnotic African drumming from Jabula. Great stuff.

Thanks for the feedback - for some reason I was convinced that Mike had been persuaded to add elements to the original mix of HR that he didn't particularly like, and that's why he'd removed them for Boxed.

But, you know...middle-aged memory! :D

You have the right facts, but not necessarily in the right order...according to the insert for the "Boxed" collection, regarding the remix "The main intention...was to cut down on what I thought had been unnecessary trimmings...I only added things like the trumpet and snare drum because I was worried that people might think it was too repetitive."

...so I think the pressure was from himself, rather than anyone else

I think the trumpet is indispensable - it really makes the piece. I think the Boxed versions of both Hergest Ridge and Ommadawn are definitely inferior to the repackaged versions recently available. It was the Boxed versions that actually made me think for a while I didn't like the two albums.

Thank you! Great info. Shame I'm not the one who edits the podcasts so I can't go back and change what I said ;)

Part 2 is now live, covering "Five Miles Out" though to Tubular Bells II.

Find out which tracks we picked as the best from this period, and hear us try to keep it together as one member of our team finds it increasingly difficult to find anything nice to say!

https://www.theeuropeanperspective.com/?p=3227

Also on iTunes :)
