No Alan, I'm not gonna cause problems over a relatively insignificant joke. I'd like to think I'm not quite that pernickerty and dimwitted!

I've never been a big fan of Pernickerty.  I think it can be overpowering, especially on a cheese sandwich.  But I know some folks that like a big dollop of Pernickerty.

I spent most of last night attempting to recreate a sandwich I made back in 1975, almost exactly 30 years ago to the day.  But the bread these days just doesn't have the texture it did back then.  Plus I used an organic spread rather than some slightly salted Lurpak, and to be honest, although the pate had a much higher 'resolution' than the stuff we had in the 70s, I wasn't entirely convinced by the resulting sarnie.

But I ate it anyway, whilst looking at a picture of the 1975 original.

I've always thought you were a well-balanced fellow, Jules, and now I see you make a well-balanced sandwich as well.

It was never you that I was worried about Arron. But I know some people were deeply attached to that original sandwich of yours, and I don't know how they'll accept the new one, with or without pernickety on it.

This morning for breakfast I had a ridiculously large piece of Buffoonery.  Without Pernickety of course (reasons stated above).  And whilst I did enjoy it, I must say that it's not quite as nice as the Buffoonery I had back when I were a lad.  But you tell the kids of today that, and they just don't believe you.....

Memory is such a fragile thing. The grass is always greener.

Which leads me nicely back onto TB2003 - howin 30 years time i'll probably remember the days of my first auditions of Mike's music.

I'm very impressed with TB03 - I love the clarity and zing (technical that, don't ask) and his minor revisions help I think. I have 4 classes of album for MO, top layer being "brilliant" and I put this in that bracket, with Amarok, Ommadawn and Hergest Ridge. Bottom level is called "not as good" and (start the car...) that's where I put the original. I know, I know...

And we also still have both versions of Arron's sandwich somewhere, I think.

Er sorry guys, I must have got the wrong room - thought this was the Mike Oldfield studies class, but this is obviously the canteen...

...and here was me thinking that Mike had just sold his house in Buckinghamshire and moved to a certain place in Kent. I'll save jokes about places with names like Sandwich (and its neighbouring village, Ham) for the geography class.

For your information, Mike Oldfield likes cheese sandwiches, but without the Branston pickle - there was an incident a few years ago where the letter T got rubbed off while it was being taken out of the fridge, and he's had an aversion to it ever since.

That may be why TB2003 doesn't quite do it for me - too much cheese...I'll go for the version with added Branson every time...

I like beer, and sandwiches with cheese
I like the smell of freshly-boiled peas
But what I like more than all of these....

The Tubular.net Canteen Song

The next time that you're playing TB-1,
Comparing it against TB-03,
Remember the conclusion is foregone
Unless you listen while you're drinking tea
And munching on a sandwich. Calm your fears
And slosh on some more Branston! Don't you know?
While others listen always with their ears,
MO fans use their stomachs. Way to go!

Second verse:

When Arron made his sandwich long ago,
He was a little sloppy with the bread;
The butter wasn't smeared quite smoothly, so
He got a weird idea into his head.

'I'll make another sandwich!' Arron cried.
I'll chop the bread more neatly! Then I'll rest.'
And so he did, but sadly for his pride,
His friends all thought the older one the best.

Right. It had to happen sooner or later.

About 7 years ago I made a sandwich that was utter heaven. It had 5 main ingredients:

Onion
Branston Pickle
Peanut Butter
Ham
Cheese

Now this, in the order of: butter scraped first, then peanut butter (I can't just spread the peanutty stuff straight onto the bread!;) then cheese, then the pickle, then the ham, then the onion. It was gorgeous. Honestly, you should go and try and make it yourself.

Upon successive attempts to recreate this wonderful sandwich, I never quite managed to reproduce the initial experience. I got to wondering why that was...

Was it because when I first ate it, I was experiencing the anticipation associated with experimentation? Or maybe because I was more hungry 7 years ago? I don't know.

Maybe successive permutations made me mess up the order. Maybe the peanut butter goes on the TOP slice, not the bottom. To be honest, I can't remember precisely, because it was too long ago. So, all I can do is dig around in the back shelf occasionally for my Branston and Peanut butter and relive (but not revitalise) the experience in part.

So at last, after all the legends, and the folk songs, we have the genuine facts about the sandwich.

Looks like that original sandwich had its own kind of copy protection, Arron.
