My favourite has always been, and will always be "Five Miles Out" - I have no idea why I love it so much, but I do.  Makes me go all nostalgic for my childhood for some reason. :)

Exactly the same reason why i love it so much!I still think it's got something to do with the drawing on the back.I got it when i was 7 and so many things from that age seem to stick with me and that picture in particular resonated with me cos of the maritime themes (anchors and the sea)and my family being from the South West. And the track sheet was a real source of wonder as well!Hours upon hours of listening to Taurus II and studying the track sheet!Oh for the simple joys of childhood. The music's pretty good too.

Of the main albums (not collections) my favourites are as follows.

Love:
TB
HR
FMO
Crises

Like:
Incantations
Discovery
Islands
Amarok
TSODE
Voyager
L+S
MOTS

The other album covers don't do much for me to be honest. Except "The complete Mike Oldfield" which I've not included as it is a collection rather than an album but that is another cover I've always loved!

And I also have happy memories of looking at the track sheet on the FMO album cover while listening to Taurus II :)

Five Miles Out for me as well
I hope the new remasters come with all original artwork
Wasn't the cd of QE2 just 1/4 cut down of the album cover?

...I would like someone to explain the track sheet to me sometime.

I think TB3, and the white and chrome minimalistic look (inside sleeve and out) is bloody class .

The album sleeve was a fold-out format (like a double album but with only one record) with the inside cover containing a track sheet showing which instruments were on which tracks of the tape deck throughout Taurus II. There is an image of it here in the tubular.net discography.

Was always fun looking at it while listening to the music!

I don't think that a musician's work should be really identified by his face or his aspect, I'd prefer to let the music speak for itself.

Agreed, Ugo - and I think that especially applies to the video clips, such as "The Bell".  :D

It's pretty logical really.Going down the sheet are all the instruments/vocals (24 tracks)and going left to right are the times (along the top).So for example where the Morris Men do there thing there are three (from memory)tracks used for that and if you look along the top you see where they come in in the track in terms of time.So it's possible to follow the track sheet while listening to the track.

Cave, you getting dangerously close to being reminded of the sort of groups - and one in particular - that 7 year olds like listening to.... (I'm in a teasing mood tonight!;)

That's right - I used to look at it a lot, and try and follow the music at the same time. I don't know if I ever figured it out properly though  - would like someone to lead me through it, and perhaps give a special talk on it :).

Yes, I'd better drop the subject like a hot potato... :D

The covers of Tr3s Lunas and Crises are still my favourites. Return to space, Mike, return to space!

You bloody had to didn't you!Come to that you seem to know a hell of a lot of the titles.Come on admit it man. You're a closet Wiggles fan.At least i have an excuse for knowing (and loathing)them!

Back on topic.I still think the original cover for Exposed was one of the best. The 2000 re-issue went some way to restoring it but the cd format is just too small to do it justice.
The Complete's cover is beautiful on the vinyl verson even if it is a compilation.I've got 2 copies but the best one is the one without the sticker (why did they do that? They were a bitch to remove. My copy of Discovery has a tear cos i tried to remove it!)and with Mike's signature on it!

Oh yeah and the very first early edition (pre cd rom) of TSODE is pretty cool with the manta ray on the front.
And while we're on the subject (but slightly diverting form albums)the cd single for Let There Be Light is something else as well with the babies bouncing up and down on balls.Same for the hologram on the Hibernaculum cd single.Endless fun looking at those in various states!

Excellent:

Tubular Bells (iconic)
Hergest Ridge (perfect illustration of the place and mood)
Ommadawn (moody magnificence)
Five Miles Out (does what it says on the tin - nice painting)
Crises (very 80s but well-executed and illustrative)
The Killing Fields (nice typography, design and movie still)
The Complete Mike Oldfield (love that kingfisher)
Earth Moving (I know, controversial but I once tried to make a film using the same "inverted water mirror reflection" technique and it's bloody difficult)

Good:

Incantations (unfashionable but quirky)
Platinum (although that looks more like Mercury to me)
QE2 (simple and graphic)
Islands (its that hands that do it - took me weeks to spot them!;)
Amarok (Ommadawn 2 - interesting lettering)
TBII (Yellow on Blue a decent reworking)
TSODE (proggy Hipgnotic perfection)
TBIII (machine-tooled precision)

Poor:

Discovery (pointless pointillism)
Heaven's Open (bad surrealism is a crime)
Voyager (beefcake Mike does cheesy Celtic look)
TB2003 (come on - pretty unimaginitive)
The Millennium Bell (sensory overload)
Music of the Spheres (cover of a powerpoint presentation)

Atrocious:

Tres Lunas (aren't those about 5 moons on the front??)
Light and Shade (unhappy Mike in a cage)

The next album should go for either a simple striking photo (not of Mike) of a wild and wonderful place (Iceland?) or utter minimalism.  No bells, no gimmicks.  Depends rather on the music.  How about a graphic close-up of one of the curves of a Telecaster with a nice sans serif font?

I never ever grow tired of seeing Trevor Key's Tubular Bell...
2.Incantations. Because I love tides & oceans
3.Songs Of Distant Earth (more so, the rear cover)

However, the art work for "Fine Old Tom" especially the Sally Army picture is worthy of a mention.  Same applies to "Downwind" and "Instructions For Angels"
