www.mikeoldfieldlightandshade.com is the official Light + Shade website.

There are some longer soundclips (1 minute as opposed to the others of roughly 30 seconds) available on mikeoldfield.de.

Why, O, why did they have to put the promo flash of L + S on a popup? my browser blocks all popups and it was annoying to change the settings. Anyway, once I got in it was a pleasant experience - 30 second clips of every track. Sunset caught my attention - love the guitar work I hear on that. This really whet my appetite & I can't wait to receive my CDs via Amazon - though they said it would take until end of Oct to reach here in Singapore :-(

Interesting news about the UMYX samples (I insert it below for those who block their popups):

Mike Oldfield's forthcoming album, 'Light and Shade' is the first ever album to feature multiple songs in U-MYX format.

U-MYX is an interactive music format which enables music fans to make their own, personalised mixes of artists recordings without needing any specialised knowledge or equipment.

U-MYX has gained huge international popularity in the last year through being adopted by many prominent artists, including Muse, Robert Plant, Paul McCartney, The Killers, New Order and many more.

The 4 included Mike Oldfield songs, Angelique, Our Father, Slipstream and Quicksilver are all wonderful archives of Mike's prolific instrumental talent, and are made all the more enticing by U-MYX's simple, interactive functionality.

Fans will be able to swap mixes amongst one another direct from their U-MYX players, and Mike will award his favourite mixer with signed copies of both Light and Shade, and his legendary Tubular Bells album.

Any clues of how to record our own mixes from U-MYX of each Mike's tunes?

What a surprise I had, just went to the L+S website, absolutely beautiful :) could have sat for a very long time just looking at the sky,the clouds, the ocean, and those colour changes so perfectly fitting to the whole theme.
After deciding not to listen to any previews of the new album, didn't go to the sample section but the U-MYX thing sounds ever so exiting. Will have to find out more about that

Putting flash on a site is one way of saying "Keep Out".

There's really little legitimate use for it other than online cartoons.

Browsing quickly through the samples, the album seems to be a mixed bag so far. Some bits caught up my attention (most of them on the Light CD), and most samples on Shade aren't any better than any other generic techno fluff I heard in my life

Nice little website though, very chilled. Well you really can't make out much from those samples they're only 30 secs long. It all certainly sounds very eletronic but that comes as no real suprise does it? I'm just hoping he's included some nice acoustic guitar work, we haven't heard any of that from what we've heard so far.

I'm being a good boy I am... ;)

I decided that I'd only listen to the tracks I've already heard in lower quality... leaving most as a surprise for Monday. :)

I'm liking the mini site and I have to suspend my pop-up blocker for it but it's not too much of a hassle.

The u-myyx thing sounds like it could be interesting so might give that ago...  :D

may have to disown the results tho'

30 seconds snippets for Mike Oldfield are insuficcient to "feel" the music, but it's a legal problem than anything else.

Bought the new album today :D Think I'm one of the first! Haven't you got it yet in England? It's out already in Holland ;)  Nice L&S website! The album is better than I expected (mainly because I heard Romance ((1994 techno experiment))  as a download, which put me off, but it seems to be the worst track on it). Surfing is really really beautiful! Are there lyrics available as yet, because I cannot hear everything the computer sings! ;) Resulution is marvellous as well! Adiós amigos! Thanks Mike

If the lyrics are not around yet, we may have a long wait. We still don't have exact lyrics for "Hergest Ridge", "Crises" and "Ommadawn"!

Hasn't anyone  noticed something unusual about the L+S website image?

Resolution sounds a bit like the second track on Tubular Bells 3.The pad sound and chords are very similar.Nice sounding though, if a bit Enyaish.

I like the sound of Quicksilver and some of the other dancy/techno tracks.I think Shade will appeal to me more than light.

I don't think I will play Romance more than once though

Are you referring to the image in the clouds?  A skull and crossbones perhaps?  Or maybe just an alien.  At least that's what I see.

I will certainly have to wait until I hear the whole album, but I agree that "Light" appeals more to me than "Shade", at least the little I've heard.

I agree with TubularBelle as usual.  31 sec clips are hard to place as evidence of a good album.  So far, if i were to judge it soley on the samples of light... i'd say ummmm!?   I haven't got the Shade side to function prolperly on this wireless network i'm on.

I'll just wait till the release to throw my two cents in!!!

TubularBelle and others... I know this isn't the place for this, but if you know where i can buy a black TB shirt please let me know thanks!!!!

cheers
Christopher

About bloody time too. Finally, samples and information, just what we've been crying out for these past months.

And just how will Mike judge the u-myx tracks? Post them somewhere obviously, but on his site, or here?

I've the whole weekend to get through now, and then hope cd-wow are as quick as play.com and delivering on release day.

Hi Chris, I have not posted on here before. Don't know where you can get black TB shirts, I imagine your best chance might be on ebay. Dark Star don't sell clothing.

WOW, I love it. Have resisted listening to the sound bites so far, I thought it was the whole album on there so didn't want to hear it yet. And it won't let me save any of the pictures either, that's disappointing, that new one on there is very nice.

I'm not really sure why some of the English fans have ordered their cds from websites, I know it may be a few pounds cheaper and you only have to wait a day or two longer but I wouldn't be able to wait. I got a call from my local music store yesterday saying they would have it on the 10th of Oct, and Amazon have quoted delivery dates between the 5th and 10th, so I should be okay. I'm going to hate reading about all you people having yours two weeks before me though.

I don't mond waiting a day or two as I can make my own music in the meantime. Its amazing how democratic recordning music has become.20 or so years ago you could not afford to get anywhere near the same kind of studio equiptment for the home as the top recording artists.A 4 track tape was about all anyone could stretch to.Now, the software on a PC just sounds amazing let alone the editing possibilities. You can now make this kind of music Mike makes from home.Obviously you still have to be able to write music of course ;-)

This idea of light and shade has given me an idea for my own music. Not to copy Mike, but I like the idea of two different moods on an album.

As for the T-shirt, couldn't you take a Tubular Bells photograph to a T-shirt printing company on the high street? I have seen them from time to time. They should do it or even online http://www.tshirtstudio.com/home.asp?w=Google&q=tshirt+printing
