Yestrerday I heard both EM and Islands, I don't know why evrybody says EM is the worst oldfield record ever when it's Islands.
Islands is the most un-oldfield record I've heard, it looks more like a Bonnie Tyler disc than an Oldfied one, and it's not even good pop music, EM is good pop!!!
Magic Touch looks like the Queen song "Magic".
If I didn't know It was Mike playing I wouldn't gess!!!! :(  :(
(This is only my oppinion  )

A agree with You, but not in every aspect.
I think the songs with male vocals (Magic touch and Flying Start) are really terrifing (these guys can't sing!;). But I don't think that other songs are exceptionally poor. I even like "When the night's on fire" very much (afaik it wasn't included in the original LP release, but on later CDs). And I also like The wind chimes.
Getting it all together - it's not Mike's "The Worst Of All Time" in my opinion.

Being pop sort of negates it being good, so I see "good pop" as an oxymoron.

However, "Islands" is one of those where I like the vocal sections more than the instrumental half. Yes, even when "Kermit the Frog" sings "Flying Start".

Don't tell me you like the way Bonnie Tyler sings??

That's not very nice for Kevin Ayers :D

I've heard two other Bonnie Tyler songs. No, I don't mind the way she sings.

Also, I like the way Kermit sings and the way Kevin Ayers sings.

"Islands" is perfect for me. I have just arrived from a week on spain, and on my cd player i played "Islands" I love all songs from it, (maybe not Magic Touch, not the best part anyway) But wow, just playing Flyyyyyyyyingstarts!!! I think its a happy song and it makes me glad. Kevin Ayers voice is strange but good. What is wrong about that?

The most funny part is when Kevin sings this; "knock on the door but the memory's poor" Spesialy "poor" because he makes it sounds  funny. "pooohhhrrR"

The same he do with this: "riding that storm since the day you were born" He makes "born" sounds strange and funny he he..

And when you look at the video its even more funny ha ha...

No no!!, this is a cool party song and known in norway from the cool 80's song!

About the other Islands songs; they are lovely and Anitas voice is beautiful. The same with Bonnie Tyler. But i always play the extended versions.
And about Wind chimes, cool and fresh!

That's true that Flying Start is kind of nice.

'Flying Start' is one of Mike's finest 80's pop pieces, in my opinion. It reflects Mike's obsession with repeating the chorus a "couple" of times before the song ends, though, but I can deal with it. As for the rest of the songs, 'North Point' and 'The Time Has Come' are pretty nice, in their slightly cheesy flavour. The others... eh!

The only one I don't like much is "When the Night's on Fire", but that one is missing from most of my "Islands" versions. I can see why it was left off.

I don't mind Bonnie Tyler's voice on Islands. I find the song a tiny bit cloying, but I think it works better with Bonnie Tyler than it would have done with, say, Maggie Reilly. I think I prefer the male vocal songs on the album - they fall slightly less into the sweet plastic territory that the others seem to edge towards. Flying Start in particular has a nice warmth to it. North Point is one I quite like too, though; more in the songwriting than the production, I'd say. Could be an interesting one to rework...

It's great to see Flying Start get so much support. Really, it's the only track on the album that I like. I don't mind Islands and North Point, but The Wind Chimes doesn't do a lot for me and I dislike the rest of the songs. Korgscrew hits the nail on the head with the "sweet plastic territory" comment - that's the reason why I love the songs on Crises and Discovery, but not the songs on Islands and Earth Moving (apart from Flying Start, Holy and Far Country). It seems to me that on Islands and Earth Moving Mike was making pop songs the 'commercial' way, rather than the way he wants to make them. I don't know, but that's the impression I get.

To me it seems Mike didn't know how to write "proper" pop/rock songs until he made Islands. Perhaps he took very little advice from other people and/or record companies up until then? Islands and Magic Touch sounds a lot like average mid-80s top-10 songs and nothing like Mike Oldfield songs. And that's not just me complaining. I've played them to my girlfriend and she didn't recoginize them as MO songs (and she's a great fan of Crises and FMO!;).
The Wind Chimes sounds uninspired. I think he focused too much on that dreaded video.

Wind chimes touch me. I think its exotic, warm long song with many things to say. I feel the warm wind in my face when i listen to it. The opening and the ending is perfect. (if it should be something "Light and shade" is missing it must be this) I love ending songs with no ends of it. It last and last...
If he did that with L+S it would be a perfect album.

Anyone else who missing ending fade out like he do on "wind chimes"?

I mentioned - incorrectly the other day that when you start up a Mac ibookG4 the chord is from Crisis - No! it's from Islands.  Have a listen see if you agree.

Whooa hoooooa - I feel another poll comming on!!!

Crisis
Islands
Amrok
and the start up chord of an ibookG4

(is tubular bells 1 really hidden in a cymbal crash all compressed up in time or am i hearing things) - if you slow it down to 1/4 speed it last 4 times longer - you can only do this with music without words.  I used to do it with a tape recorded in 1976 when I was trying to decipher what the heck was going on in tubular bells and incantations so I could try to play it!!!  Phew .... Tabs make it so much easier!!!!

Anyway - has any one else done that with Amrok and heard anything strange??!!
