I think the Oldfield, Busta Rhymes combo is hurtling toward's the Hokum section of Tubular.net

Yes, but even though I have an urge to scrub my ears out afterwards, it's kinda fun. In a Bizarro World way.

Thanks, EeToN, for the info on that cover. It's good to know  the actual translation of the Hungarian title.

I'm no expert, but it looks like that guy's got quite a set-up. Very nice.

One year later...here's the video I made while Mike was playing To France @ NNOTP Germany 2006 in Cologne on 16/12/06 - my very first MO concert ever \o/

Heh, I don't like that song at all, but it looks nice. I've ordered the Night of the Proms DVD with his performance of Tubular Bells. Can't wait to see that! I really hope he's going to tour with Music of the Spheres. Seeing him live will be mindblowing.

Sorry for double-posting, but here's the MotS-promo from Universal Italy.
Funny they call it a MotS-promo, he doesn't say a word about it. :)

Hi,

I've created a kind of music guide on Squidoo featuring 26 Mike Oldfield youtube videos in five stages of increasing complexity, to help people appreciate Oldfield's music little by little (hey, it's not always easy to appreciate Amarok if that's the first thing you listen to from Mike.) It also includes a list of recommended CDs of increasing complexity, not comprehensive but very representative in my opinion.

Feel free to visit and make any suggestions for improvement. By the way, I also included videos and CDs from Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, JMJ, Kraftwerk and Klaus Schulze. This should help promote this kind of music, since Squidoo is a very important and popular social website... You can take a look at it here: Mike Oldfield Music Guide

Enjoy!

Jaime

JaimeB, I think your four-stage MO listening guide is a great idea. It makes me wonder which pieces/albums I would suggest, as well. And I had to laugh at your girlfriend's less than ideal reaction to Ommadawn: "When I wanted to introduce my (then) girlfriend to Mike Oldfield's music, I made the fatal mistake of having her listen to my favorite piece Ommadawn. Well, it took her six years to get over it!"

Thanks for the thumbs up, Sweetpea!

And yes, I remember she would only listen to Tubular Bells 3 and The Millenium Bell at first, which was a bit frustrating. Now she's my wife and she's addicted to Tubular Bells 2 and even likes Ommadawn after all!!!  :p

I'm still holding Amarok though...

Just a quick note to say that I've greatly improved the Mike Oldfield Music Guide, it used to take very long to load and now it's solved. Any suggestions are welcome! :)

anyone know anything about this? I haven't read every single comment in this You tube section, so my apologies if it's been discussed before... I find it kind of surreal...and it's making me want to go skiing! :D

On the subject of Fenn, one of my favourite non-MO popular pieces is on Mason (of Pink Floyd) and Fenn's Profiles album. The piece is "Malta"; the introduction isn't much but after that it moves into the kind of emotional highs and lows that characterize much of Mike's music. The album is worth buying just for this.

anyone know anything about this?

That video is exactly what it says on You Tube, an Old Grey Whistle Test video from 1973. It is not an official video but a piece of film the BBC programme found to fit the music when it was first aired. They did this a lot with new material from artists who could not perform in the studio.

Apparently, there was a record industry executive visiting the BBC at the time and saw the clip. This led to Tubular Bells getting a distribution deal in the USA. I don't have the guy's name to hand but I remember "Whispering" Bob Harris talking about it once.

EDIT: Found him - it was Phil Carson of Atlantic Records
