At the very start of HR it's not the Solina, or maybe it's not just that. It's (at least) 3 Farfisa organs playing the same notes together, plus the Solina. At least to my ears. :)

I think there are no synthesizers on Hergest Ridge. All the layers are created with organs.
In Changeling Oldfield mentions that he was introduced to the Solina String Synth when the Edgar Broughton Band visited him at The Beacon. Maybe the first appearance is on In Dulci Jubilo For Maureen.

All the layers are created with organs.

Farfisa, Lowrey & Gemini Organs - to be precise.

There was already a discussion about the use of organs which you can find here.

;)

Adding to Syd's link above, I may say that the Farfisa is the one which sounds more "reedy" than the other two - indeed, I'm tempted to say that it almost sounds like an accordion. The Italian name of the accordion is fisarmonica and Farfisa is an Italian company who made fisarmonicas (accordions) before becoming famous all over the world for its electronic organs.
