Forgive me for posting on such an 'old' topic, but.....

Perhaps there are little blips to keep you listening?

I know that when I listen to the whole of Tubular Bells (including TB2003) that there are times when I hear something just a tiny bit out of place, then realise I was just drifting along with the music, and not really paying attention.

I have used detuned instruments in my own music for added depth. How do you think JMJ gets his synths to sound the way they do?  :p

On the original TB, all that I can think of "out of tune" piano is a hard-hitting F# note smackdab in the middle of a C chord. Is that kind of think people are talking about? If it is, then it's not at all out of tune, neither wrong. It's just an odd harmony.

But I might be wrong...

After listening to the whole thing on the DVD-A, which I've just finished doing, I feel finally able to voice my opinion on this: yes, it's weird, but it's intentional. ;) The reason why I think this has nothing to do with the musical aspects of "Harmonics", but with a much simpler thought - i.e. the fact that Mike and the guys who did the 5.1 mix apparently took a very long time to do it, thus they had plenty of chances to go and adjust something...if they really felt the need of adjusting it. :) Or, in other words, the weird piano notes are there (on the CD and on the DVD-A) for the same exact reason that John Cleese's double 'Mandolin' is in the CD and has been retained on the DVD-A: because it was meant to be like that. ;) A well-known Latin saying tells us that making a mistake is human, but repeating the same mistake is devilish. So, unless Mike is some sort of demon :D, it's not a mistake. ;)

The F# notes are not out-of-tune, just slightly dissonant, and anticipates the upcoming E minor chord. Sorry to go all technical. :)
