For some reason I've only just got around to listening to The Orchestral Tubular Bells. What most surprised me was how the orchestration makes the work in places sound akin to Sibelius (given Mike's acknowledgement of Sibelius's influence on him). In particular, the repeated bass line that normally leads to the announcement-of-instruments section becomes an insistent pattern on the strings that sounds very much like the introduction to Sibelius's Luonnotar (one of my favourite Sibelius pieces).
