Which is your least favourite?

Sheesh, this isn't too easy, after all. Perhaps 'Saved By The Bell', or maybe the title track... but just to be obnoxious, I voted for 'The Lake'.

Definitely Saved By A Bell. All the other tracks have really grown on me over the years, but this one... not really.

Saved by a Bell also. Why did Mike write that one to make Discovery a 9/10 record IMHO??

I don't know, but it gets my vote too. Perhaps it was written to be a runaway winner in a future poll?  ;)  :D

I don't hate any of Mikes music. I think it ranges from excellent to above average for the pieces that are not to my taste (but I'd still rather listen to them than 99% of current chart music). But saved By A Bell to me is the exception (as well as Speak). It sounds like the worlds cheesiest chat up line that would get you slapped in the face. Imagine going up to a girl (or boy if you are female or other way inclined) and saying it in a John Major monotone voice, "Would you like to look through my telescope?" It is cringe inducing. I would never play that track in company. I even blush when I listen to it on my own. In fact I usually just skip that track now. And this from someone who loves Gong's Flying teapot, Angels Egg and You.

Saved by a Bell doesn't fit the album. It's also the only song on the album that's in a major key. Listen to the chord sequence and it's not totally unlike Into Wonderland actually (although the latter is way better!;).
Crystal Gazing and the Lake come close second for me. The former is a bit dull and the Lake is (as someone put it) too cutesy.

What strikes me when listening to Discovery is how well it's produced. What happened to that particular skill of Mike's when he recorded Earth moving? I think Simon Philips was an important person at the time, production-wise.

probably because of the lyrics about milky ways... it always makes me want to eat a milky way, but they can't be found anymore  :/

I never realised Saved by a Bell was so unpopular. I voted for Crystal Gazing myself. It's just never really done anything for me.

I love the backing on Saved by a bell! Sounds just like MIDI but in a good way.

I like it's innocence/silliness, it's endearing.

By the way, that chat up line works a treat  ;)

I don't think the lyrics are bad, but to keep the fans happy he could have let Barry sing:

"would you like to look at my studio
the piano's a fine thing to see
All around lay instruments
And I can play them well, those bells "
:)  :D

I feel that way about "The Wind Chimes 2" (the long one) on "Islands".
