I'm not going to enter into any debate about "prog", as I consider it pointless; but "Music from the Balcony" is actually quite structured/formal, with regard to its overall architecture: for example, you get that ten-note melody I've mentioned before; it returns with variations, and then finally it's recapitulated in its original form just before the end. And the same applies with the other main themes. I think it's the chaotic-sounding jungle noises etc that tend to fool people into thinking "Balcony" is unstructured.

Yes, there are recapitulations and variations, but they don't always seem very logical -- like that recurring fast section with saxophones and the guitar wailing on top, which appears at the most unexpected places. And the breaking in of sounds and pseudo-jazz/pseudo-blues intrusions are all quite subversive, not necessarily in form, but in content.

Well I think that Ommadawn IS the greatest album of all time
Hergest Ridge is the second best and Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here is the third

Yes for me it is the best. There is more variety than in HR .
It is an extremely powerful piece of music. I feel a lot of pain in the music, I can feel the pain. It reminds me of my (not so happy) childhood. Ommadawn is sometimes too much for me. On horseback is absolutely fantastic to me as well.I just can't understand why On Horseback never was a hit.
I really love to see both pain in music as love and the way they sometimes mix together is something which can't be heard in pop music IMO. A lot of MO albums display life in a frank and earnest way. I've read someone stating Ommadawn was on the verge of brilliance. For me this is not true. there is something in both HR and Ommadawn that simply outrun brilliance or geniality. There is something so divine in them and yet so down to earth that makes it hard to tell how I feel about them.
but for me HR is more beautiful than Ommadawn, and beauty beats skill to me ( not that Ommadawn isn't beautiful).

Ommadawn was my favourite album of all time, until the release of Bjork-Vesperatine 2001. Bjork has yet to collaberate with Mike (To the best of my knowledge?) Nearly every track utilises an Innuit Choir. Stand out tracks would be Unison, Pagan Poetry, Aurora, Heirloom and Harm Of Will.It is the only other album besides Ommadawn that cherishes the female voice and finds a way to give prominance to it.  :)  :)  :)

Impossible to determine what is the greatest album of all time but... Ommadawn is (imho) the best album of Oldfield "classic" era (i.e. the first four albums), and this era is contains probably some of the most peculiar, poetical and beautiful music ever written.  :)
