I was talking to my bassist last night about music and guitarists and i mentioned that my favourite player of all time was Mike Oldfield.Jean-Michel thought about this for a moment and said (imagine a polish-canadian accent)"yes....i like Mike Oldfield. His playing is very.......elegent".
The word elegent just seemed to sum up his playing, and indeed a lot of his music, perfectly.
In one or two words how would you guys sum it up?And it can be anything you want.

I don't know about Elegant. Makes me think of Mark Knopfler. :O
I would say his playing is distinct. He knows what notes he intend to play and you get to hear them all.

I agree with you Caveman... elegant is a perfect word. Beautiful is another.

Pure springs to mind too.Especially some of his acoustic playing.Free of the posturing BS of a lot of players.

trying to think of word that sums up the emotion I can hear in his playing, but unsuccessful so far

I don't think that words such as "elegant" or "beautiful" sum up all of Mike's playing. There are quite a few violent passages, all through his 20+ albums, which have no elegance or beauty at all - they are just extremely powerful. Maybe they do find their beauty in their power, but they're not "beautiful" in the strictest sense of the word.

My choice of words? Well, there's more than two also for me. Inventive. Innovative. Original. New. Different. Maybe the last is the best one. :)

How 'bout three words? Over too soon. Hehe.

badass ;)

"Elegant" doesn't quite hit the mark for me. His playing nowadays might be considered elegant but in the earlier days it was far from elegant, in fact quite sloppy but in a way that completely worked and only added to the intensity of the music.

I guess "unique" could be the one word that best describes it. He sounds like no-one else, even these days.
