I answered the poll with 'annoyed'.  I played Amorok the other day and I just wanted it to end.  However I must add I've not had it long and this was only the 2nd time I've played the whole thing through.

I listened to Ommadawn for some relief.

I don't think it's so fa fetched [...]

@ Sweetpea: was this a typo? Considering that we're talking about Amarok (So Fa So... Fa Soo Fa So... So Fa So... etc.) I'd very much like to think that it wasn't, and that it was intentional :D

So many people really like it, so maybe it'll grow on me with time.

Not so sure about that. moonchildhippy for instance doesn't really dig amarok either and I think has had the same thought for a few years (others love it, therefore it might grow on me). I think it is just one of those things you either get or don't get. Me, I'm fortunate enough to "get it" with amarok, but then I'm unfortunate enough to not "get" ommadawn! Go figure...

These are my feelings too, Matt. To me Ommadawn is Amarok -1 rather than that Amarok is Ommadawn 2. I don't think it's a "go figure" situation; it's more aligned with the Exegesis phenomenon, and whether one's own emotions are more aligned pre- or post-.

I never got this connection between Ommadawn and Amarok, because ignoring Mike's own motivations and influences, both albums are only as similar as they are similar to every other Mike Oldfield album. I think that's what spoils some people's fun: wrong expectations. I never tried to figure out what's listening to music devoid of ANY expectation. It might not be easy, but trying isn't hard either. A bias can be a hard thing to defeat.

Hmmm, I don't think that is the case for me, my favourites are Hergest Ridge, TB and Amarok which are both pre and post. I just never quite got the hang of Ommadawn for some reason.

From the man himself in article here Amarok started off life as Ommadawn II but then "went off a little in it's own direction". I also don't see a particular connection between the end results. What I do find interesting is the number of people who love one but not the other. What is it that is somehow mutually exclusive between those two pieces!

When I first read that I thought no way is there any similarity, but actually in the first few bars of each piece I hear a commonality.

Deedle-de-de-de-de-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee- (the start of Ommadawn)

Ba-ba-ba-baa-Ba-ba-ba-baa-Baa-Baa-Baa-Baa (the start of Amarok)

Do you hear the commonality ?

Apart from the fact that Baa-Baa reminds me a lot of Mike Singing "Baa Baa black sheep, have you any wool?" from the end of "Branches" (on the Sallyangie bonus disc) :D, yes, I do hear the resemblance. However, O is in straight four-four, A is 5/4. That added quarter beat matters. A lot. :D

:D (Maybe "Bah" is better)

What is that resemblance? - not the timing - is it the chord ?

It's the timing of the single notes. :)

hahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhaaahappy :D
Amarok most be the must strange album in the world. One track of all you wish to hear. Superb ending at the album, many strange sounds, millions of great guitar solo's and riffs.
Amazing!!!!

Reading the title to this thread todaybrought up a silly thought about Star Trek IV (one of my favorite movies) in which the computer asks Spock, "How do you feel?"  Being a Vulcan, he was confused by the question. ("I do not understand the question."  "Spock, the computer knows you're half-human," said his mother). I thought about how Spock would react to Amarok, maybe raising one eyebrow.  Then I wondered how Worf would react to it (not that it bears much resemblance to Klingon opera) and wondered if Mike would be hailed as an honorary Terran member of the Klingon House of Musicians or if he'd be banned. :D

Happy to be alive.  Also happy to think that human beings are capable of such musical genius as Amarok.

Really sorry about this, but I went for "bored" (ducks under table to avoid missiles from disgruntled Amarokies  :p )

Try as I might - and boy have I tried and tried - but I still can't get this album without wanting to pull my nails or just atrophy into a coma.

I wouldn't say it was Mike's weakest of albums because clearly it has a legion of fans. But it just doesn't appeal to my mind or ears regrettably  :/

God this album is devisive!I love it.Always have, always will. But then i don't like TMB,L&S or Tres Lunas and a lot of people love them.
It just goes to show the diversity of Oldfield's back catalogue i think.
Perhaps the ads should have had the tag line "Amarok-the new Marmite album by Mike Oldfield"
