I've got this single which is basically the whole of Hergest Ridge edited down to a 7". It seems to be an american promo.

I've never seen any reference to it anywhere so wondered if you were all aware of it. I was inspired to put up this post by having just heard the Ommadawn 7" for the first time, really loved it.

I've never heard it. What parts of Hergest Ridge are in the edit?
The legendary "Spanish Tune" single is said to contain a section from HR, but I've never heard what part it is. Could there be a connection?

http://tubular.net/faq/#3.2

I've got it (tag in the mp3 says it's taken from the UK 7" (VS 112)). It's a promo edit/extract from the part 2 :

I don't know if the US version of this disc contains different extract(s).

Hey hairy old hippy,

I know nothing of which you speak man, I was merely drawn to this post as I love your moniker and hadn't seen you post in a long long while. And now I discover that you are only 29 years old! just one year older than my son, hairy old hippy indeed!! Would still love to see a photo of you though, do you have long hair at least, mmmm?

Hello there Tubular Belle, I do indeed have hair, check out my music page at http://www.myspace.com/andrewtaylor1 there is evidence there and some of my tunes.

As for the record it's set out like part two of the album but with most of it cut out. Every now and then it skips a few bars, the 'thunderstorm' section is condensed down to about 30 seconds!

Thanks Captain Cavern, will have to try and track down VS112.

The 7" single Spanish Tune (catalogue number VS 112) was a testpressing only which first appeared in the discography in the book "10 Mike Oldfield 1973 - 1983" (Virgin Music - VR 80594). It featured an edit of the beginning of Hergest Ridge Part 2 (with spanish guitar) and was therefore given its title. It runs about 3 minutes and 2 seconds was never officially released. It is one of the most sought after Oldfield records.

The aforementioned mix on the 7" US release (PR 223) comprises the whole side of Hergest Ridge Part 2 on one side and was a promotional release for radio stations.

Ah ha, that's the one. The promo, cheers Man in the Rain. Would never have found VS112 anyway.

As far as I remember, the single includes in A side this selection of excerpts (there are some TB singles done in the same way) and an excerpt of HR (part 2) on the B side. This excerpt (that goes aproximately from 2:36 to 5:40 of HR (part 2) without further edition than a fade out at the end) it is the same that you can hear on the "Spanish Tune" single.

Thanks a lot for clearing that up! So the "spanish tune" is the beginning of part 2....interesting.

So is PR223 quite rare then?

Perhaps Hairy Old Hippy should really be Hairy Young Hippy if he's only 29, a mere babe indeed  :).  Long haired hippies mmmm sexy ;) .

I think I've seen the Spanish Tune single for sale on e-bay before, 'til then I'd neved heard of it. How much is a reasonable price to pay for it??

So, the VS-112 from UK is only two one-sided testpressings ?

The UK 7" Hergest Ridge single exists as a 1 sided white label test pressing only.  The matrix number is VS112 A 1-U.  There is to my knowledge, no known 2 sided pressing of the single, no regular release with proper labels etc. or a 1 sided single with a 'b' side matrix number.

This is interesting, my copy is definitely VS112 A 1-U but afgan has what appears to be a second pressing as a B side. I'd like to know what is on the reverse of the second test pressing as my first test pressing has a test tone and a matrix LPFB. It is not blank like some other testpressings I've seen and the words "Hergest Ridge Promo" are only written on this side which must have confused people.

This also begs the question - was a different A side being lined up for official release after the initial promo release?
