I live not too far from Hergest Ridge (near Hay on Wye the book town) and I've walked over the ridge on the Offa's Dyke path to Kington. Like many people, I've always pronounced it as 'Her' 'gest' however the correct pronunciation is 'Har' 'gust'.

Are others aware of this?

Well, I am aware that the name "Hergest" is of German origin, and so it's very fitting for it to be pronounced as "Hargist" rather then "Herjest". :)

Offa's Dyke sounds an interesting place. Offa was a King of Mercia, but I had no idea he had left his mark on the landscape.

Offa's Dyke was Mercian for Off His Trolley-which is what he was when he left said mark on the landscape.

The bloke from the Environment Agency was absolutely livid.
