Here's a collage of some stills from the pan around Mike's studio from the Millennium Bell DVD.
Try to identify as many guitars as you can :)
Sorry that the bottom row suffers heavily from motion blur (and 'slightly' from obscuration by Mike's speakers...).

You better not do this with a 12-string for the tension is significantly higher. The neck might break.

this is true, but i also read that hanging standard 6 string guitars are quite good for them, as it can stop any problems with the truss rod, keeps it straight...

just what ive read in an ibanez manual :)

ive also heard its not at all good to keep a guitar in a case for too long, as it can cause condensation and cause parts to warp and damage the wood.

personally, i hang most of my guitars, but im moving house right now so they are all on stands in a room at the mo!

Handing guitars by the neck is probably the best way to store them - the neck is under a high compressive force due to string tension - you relieve this a little by hanging it from it's neck.

don't try this with humans - they break!

I dont think that is correct - the connection point for hanging is below the nut so the weight of the guitar acts in the opposite direction to the string tension - reducing the neck stress (slightly).

if the guitar has a bent over head then there will probably be a bending moment (that's an engineering one - not a musical one!;) - but that also works to reduced stress.

If you can tell me the tension in the strings - the cross sectional area of the neck - the angle of bend and the weight of the guitar I can calculate the new force in the guitar neck for you.

Any way - even if the sound changes over time - Mike's guitars all sound rather good I suggest every one hangs their Guitars - may be they will get the same sound.

 :D
