Wow, I always thought the version of 'Guilty' on the "Complete Mike Oldfield" was the long version - but the version on the Platinum Collection is a totally different mix!

Any clues as to how many different versions of this track there really are and where to find them?!

James

If you count the live version, on Exposed, there are 3 of them:

- Original (on The Complete)
- Live (on Exposed)
- Long (on Platinum Collection)

... and that's about all, I think. :)

There are also the two sides of the 12" blue single. Both of which might be covered in the other versions!

Also, there exists an orchestral version... not very good sound quality though :-(

According to the Xanthos discography there are three studio versions of them, but you can see that it's really just two:

Quote
 1. Single version: Available on all 7" singles "Guilty / Excerpt From
Incantations" as well as on the 12" single "Guilty / Guilty". This
version runs 4:00 minutes. Also released on the Canadian edition of
"Airborn", on "Impressions", on the compilation album "The Complete
Mike Oldfield" and on the "Elements" box set. It's sometimes called
"I'm Guilty" or "I Am Guilty".

 2. Long Version: This version runs 6:38 minutes and is only available
on the 12" single "Guilty". Not released on CD.

 3. Short version: It plays 3:48 minutes only, but is nothing more than
the 4:00 minutes version as a faster recording. It's only released
on the US editions of "Airborn" and not available on CD at all.

However, there seem to be a lot of different live versions (though, I didn't check whether some of them are identical):

Quote
Guilty (Live) (3:38) * Extract From Tubular Bells (Live)                    [79]

Guilty (Live) (4:05) * Sailor's Hornpipe (Live)                                 [79]

MIKE OLDFIELD IN CONCERT (EP):                                                [80]
Extract From Tubular Bells (Live) * Blue Peter * Guilty (Live) * Punkadiddle

Guilty (Live) (4:02) * Extract From Tubular Bells (Live)                    [79]

Guilty (Live) (4.04) on Mike Oldfield's Wonderland                          [81]

Guilty (5:37) on Exposed                                                             [79]

I think these 4 versions might be the same.

I'm 100% sure that version (2) and (3) of the quote
are identical German 12" edits from the Exposed version (4).
And I guess version (1) is the 7" edit from that same edit.

In Germany a 7" and 12" single was released in 1979.
It featured an Exposed edit from Tubular Bells on the a-side
and an Exposed edit from Guilty on the b-side. The latter
was included on the Benelux compilation Mike Oldfields Wonderland.

I think I have this as a very poor quality MP3 - but would love to know more about it - who is it? is it a cover? where on earth can I find it in studio quality?

It reminds me a bit of the Percy Faith version of Tubular Bells - but numerous searches have proved fruitless in my search to find out who did the Guilty version...
